The Haunted House on the Hill (My review of Lauryn Hill's free Bklyn Concert)

Get into the subject. Where do I begin? The begining you say? Anyway, I arrived aound 6:30 to a line that wrapped completely around the corner to which I was on the end. The weather was so Hot and Humid that a field slave would have ran for cover. But that didn't deter anyone. People were all a buzz that Lauryn was performing. They were chanting her old tunes and seeing who knew more of her lyrics than the other. Little did we know what was brewing on the inside.

We got in and fortunately got seats. I was amazed at the number of people standing and squeezing into corners just to get a glimpse. I thought the Pope was to appear at Wingate last night.

So, we were warmed up by a very sweaty, 17-year old with a belly that moved like jelly on a warm biscuit that they called Sean Kingston. Can't hate though since his song, "Beautiful Girl" is a hit. After he showed us that he could hold the mic and move back and forth across the stage without getting his t-shirt soaking wet

He finished up around 9:15 and Ms. Hill did not grace the stage until 10 p.m. Prior to that they announced that she was enroute and she is just coming off a long European tour so her voice is not in full gear. So she's finally introduced and the crowd erupts. People are standing on chairs and pushing chanting Lauryn,Lauryn ....Only to have her band to play a whole 15 minutes intro before she stepped on the stage. Once she did, I thought we were at a taping of BET's Hot Ghetto Mess. She had a do on her head that wouldn't have even made the cutting floor of Hairspray. In the midst of the Amistad heat she was wearing a leather jacket with fringes. I prayed that the EMT's were right back stage cause she was trying it. She then opened her mouth and people bagan to look at one another like WTF! ? what is she singing ?. She sounded a mess. I left after the 3rd song. People wanted her to do the hits. The line to get out was fiercer than the line to get in. sad

falloff Your description had me rolling but honestly the whole thing sounds sad. I have to say I'm glad I didn't even bother not that I considered going. I've yet to hear anything that makes me want to take that chance. At least it was free but sounds like she didn't get on to like 10:30. Not good for a Monday night in the park.

Amerie just played at a free concert too, this wasnt the same event?? Anyway its weird to hear of Lauryn that way, but thats what the business does to some people and the combination of Business,Family and friends just really make it all go haywire, it almost sounds like she is doing an AMy Whinehouse impression.

It's a shame. Because folk WANT her to do well. I do. But by most accounts, she is a stir-fried mess. I'll pray for her.

I wonder what's been going on with her make up lately. This is a bit toned down compared to another photo I saw where she truly rivaled a clown. I saw one review say her performance was one of the year's best? I guess it depends what you expect and what you actually get.

She must have been hot. Literally.

The NY Times' review was very generous in comparison.

Wow and before reading your review I was mad that I wasn't in the city and had to miss Lauryn's performance but after reading this, maybe it's a good thing I missed seeing her live...Still sad to hear what is going on w/Lauryn though, I really hope she gets it together soon sad.
