When you used to buy records in the 70s or 80s

How often did you come across a warped copy that you had JUST bought and opened? pissed

In 1987 I bought BDP´s "Criminal Minded" album. When I put it on the record player I noticed this big drop of vinyl on the record, like a big bump or something, and it was the instrumental version of the album. So I brought it back and took some other album instead. Now I regret that because I think the instrumental version of that album is quite rare, bump or not. It looked exactly like the regular version.

a LITTLE warping was unavoidable every now and then, but out of 2000+ vinyl records I bought I only remember two occasions where it was up to the point of unplayability (is that a word?) with the needle hopping up and down, so I actually went back to the store to exchange it

Atlantic Starr - Yours Forever
this was a shitty expensive import as far as I remember...

Club House - Do It Again meets Billie Jean
this was a shitty expensive 12 inch as far as I remember...
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

That was always a possibility with those paper thin LPs you'd get from the Columbia House record club. confused

that's what i'm talking about. but um, seems like me and my friends run into this way too often, not only with used records, but like... sealed records that have been around forever which is a risk ya take i guess, and sealed reissues that musta been in the sun confused

I didn't find warping that big a problem - scratches & skips were more common.
You could buy a lp & take it back cause it skipped & the new copy would skip in exactly the same spot. Cassettes ended that problem

I've also heard if you bought an album to take the wrapper off
because that could cause a record to warp.
The plastic wrap would shrink over time.

Maybe they weren't, specific to the record club, but just seemed that way because I had so many of them.

Now there was a difference based on labels.
The Rolling Stone vinyl I bought on the London label was definitely higher quality product.

That never happened to me.....

My brother told me very early on not to store them flat, as that would encourage warping.....all my vinyl to this day are stored totally upright with no slant and with sturdy structure to keep them that way.

cool

yeah never store them horizontally, but certainly do not pack them too tight vertically either.

Sometimes the quality of vinyl differs from country to country....some vinyl is heavier, some lighter, some sounds better and louder, and some pressings of the same album sound very thin. Had this quite a lot in the days of vinyl.Especially with records of the Jive label....some of Jive´s German pressings sounded a bit flat and thin compared to the USA pressings.
