The Sam Cooke affair almost happen according to her book...

But it didn't, according to her book...

You think maybe she stopped pursuing it because she didn't wanna be hurt? We know Sam was a womanizer and I'm sure she didn't want one of her idols to dump her like next week's lunch. So she chose to remain friends until the end of his life.

Speaking of Ted White.

She denied that infamous Time magazine article in the book(in which it described her physical abuse condition) I guess she wanted to protect Ted's rep, or it might be just pride or denial. Who knows?

I think she was protecting his rep. In the article, there was a picture of Ted obviously shouting at Aretha while Aretha looks frightened or confused or whatever. Also, Ted had a reputation for being controlling (considering odd how Aretha's public image of demanding "r-e-s-p-e-c-t" came about, fortunately she did finally divorce him). According to Jerry Wexler, while Aretha and the Muscle Shoals musical team were working on "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)", one of the musicians flirted with Aretha, this caused an uproar and Ted confronted the guy and was beating the mess out of him. That's why they left Alabama and recorded the rest of the "I Never Loved..." album in the Atlantic studios in New York because Ted was being too much.

I'll be damned eek

Thats a rough cat. Where can I see that pic?

In his bio-DVD, it was her father knocking the door on some crummy motel's bedroom(where she and Sam were staying) shouting his lungs out for her to get outta there.

In her words, "Daddy changed the course of history".

Mavis Staples told the same story too(they were touring 2ghether @ the time). She said she was on the verge of pissing on herself from fear when she saw Ree's daddy knocking on that door. She was sure that the sun will go down with Aretha being killed by her daddy lol

LOL! I don't know if I could find it online BUT I did see this picture during her LEGENDS special on VH-1 when they talk about that specific issue. And he looked like he was about to hurt Aretha. eek In any case, it's actually sad. I think the woman suffered a lot though, if you've seen some of her late-'60s, early-'70s pictures when she's in the Atlantic studios with an Afro and a casual outfit, her eyes look blotchy, even sad, like she's been drinking beer or something. I think she also abused drugs at one point or another and that's why she looks the way she do (and obviously don't think nothing's wrong with it on the outside). We all joke about her but this lady has probably led a sad life for the most part. Whatever went on in her life, we may never find it until she passes away. Much like James Brown fathering two kids out of wedlock...

That's for sure.

They'll probably have her lip-synching to Aretha's actual songs. Didn't they do that in "Ray"??

See what I mean? CONTROLLING! When you're a woman and your father is that protective, you look for men that can be like that... like Ted for instance. But I think you have to wonder about that, like was C.L. aware of Sam's reputation and maybe Aretha was afraid of doing something that her father would never forgive her for. It's like she wanted to rebel but didn't.

Talking of Aretha, she had her first two children out of wedlock. The first one was when she was 15 and the second when she was 16. I have always wonder who were their fathers? There is something about the whole thing that sounds so disturbing, considedring she was a Preacher's daughter.

The eldest child's first name was Clarence, I think there was a Jr. at the end of it but the fact that Aretha named it after her father... ok, if her son Clarence's full name had a different middle name than Rev C.L.'s did, I can understand how she'd be that close to her daddy that she called him Clarence but it is disturbing considering what she was doing.

I think the church community called her a heathen for doing this and that was one of the main reasons she decided to go the secular route because in their minds Aretha had done the ultimate sin - being a teenager having a child out of wedlock. Talk about a DOUBLE WHAMMY!

*sigh* disbelief Always drama with the preacher's kids. I didn't kow about that rumor about she and her dad--and I live here in Detroit less than a mile from their church and where they lived back in the day.

nod Except for the part where he's rehearsing "I Got a Woman" after he has sex with his girlfriend (before marriage), Jamie Foxx was definitely imitated Ray but that was the only scene he actually sung. Other than that, Ray lipped for him. It's actually amazing that as sick Ray was at the time he could still belt out like he did in "Drown In My Own Tears", "Hit the Road Jack", "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand" (YES HE ACTUALLY RE-RECORDED THAT!!!) and "You Don't Know Me" while classic Ray was played throughout.

ALWAYS! Marvin and Aretha probably suffered through a WHOLE LOT. Especially Marvin with his father having a double life, that would f*ck ANYBODY up. But Marvin, Sr. and C.L. weren't even angels anyway. With Marvin, he tried fighting off his father's imposing image (until it consumed him and he got killed by his dad), Aretha tried protecting her dad for obvious reasons. She don't wanna be looked on as a hypocrite and unfortunately if anything came out, she'll be forced to admit it and Aretha's a woman who loves control nowadays so she wants to hide everything. That's probably why she talks about food a lot. shrug

From the younger cats; D'Angelo. He did mention his conversation with his father(a preacher too) about Marvin's death and that he understand where Marvin's dad coming from.

Meaning: pull that shit with me and they'll send me to the electric chair for ripping your ass off lol

But its true, ALL children from strict households share the same demons and guilt-driven nature.

Yeah and I do understand Marvin, Sr. but it's still f*cked up that it happened like that. I just wish Marvin stayed in Belgium and continued to get well. sad I think he wanted to but everybody was excited about "Sexual Healing" and wanted to see him again. I think he only came back to America because his mother was supposedly sick. How odd he died eleven days before my birth. eek Oddly, when my brother was born, he was born a month and a half after Sam Cooke died. Maybe that's why me and him are old school music fans. lol

Sam Cooke and Bobby Womack were also preacher men's children. nod

If the movie is in fact based on that book, then be ready for loads of bullshit and many scenes through a variety of hamburger stands(I'm not joking at all btw).

I felt SO cheated when I read that book. Aunt ReRe won't tell you a THING about the recording process of her music, but will ramble on & on about a cheeseburger she ate back in 1967 across the recording studio building in some burger stand,,,now mind you, 1967 I say.

And don't get her started on the fellow soul sirens. I don't know what it is about girlfriend, but the bitch must be allergic with anybody who has a vagina between their legs(She put every chic through some headache, EVEN her own sisters).

I tell ya, If she ain't bragging about her no good daddy(you'd think she's talking about the 2nd coming) she would talk about the taste of each and every goddamn hamburger she ate.

So you know I'm def not holding my breath of that mess disbelief lol

I have that book too lol I just hope the movie turns out alright

Aretha wasn't always as big as she is now. Actually, Jennifer is about the size Aretha was when she recorded the Lady Soul album.

Nobody is Aretha except for Aretha.
But atm I can't think of any singer/actress out there that would be more suitable for the job than J-Hud.
So if the industry thinks a biopic on her has to be done, be glad they chose a talented actress/singer at least.
Just my 2 cents.
