heard it this morning

it sucks

and it is very telling of why new music threads die here on the org when Chaka Khan gets so much attention

saw her in Vegas at 3121 and it was totally awful

yeah, she was a legend....but then all she does nowadays is yell on stage

it is not even singing

go figure

It's true that many of her recently "LIVE" performances have been less than spectacular.
However what this album proves is that in a controlled environment (the recording studio) she still has the goods to outdo any teenybop diva-wannabe you'd care to name.

Great choice of material that is recorded and performed very well.

Would you care to expand on your opinion of the album beyond "it sucks"?

I heard "Angel" on the radio yesterday.....that's such a GREAT SONG!! music So beautiful and heartfelt.I heard that Chaka wrote it herself. It's becoming one of my new favorite Chaka tunes!!

Who else loves that song??

From what i've heard, she wrote it based on entries from her diary.

I've mentioned to others that this is my favorite song on the album.
The chord progression, story, melody and arrangement have all the qualities to make it a Pop standard.

Thanks to a very special org friend worship I was able to hear several of these a few weeks ago. The staying power is solid, the tracks I heard are amazing ~ Angel would be my favourite from the group too ~ it brought tears more than once. I'll be buying this tomorrow along with pray Joni and PJ.

I'm almost halfway through it and it's my 1st listen. So far, it's pretty decent. I skipped ahead to check out the "Sign of the Times" cover and I was impressed- not better than the original, but a nice and updated remake.

On the note of real music, I bought Common's "Finding Forever" on yesterday. For those that miss real hip hop, you might wanna check that one out as well.

Is there any funk on the damn thing? I'm not talking about mellow, midtempo, head bobbing funk. I'm talking about hard uptempo ass shakin' funk. If so, is there more than one uptempo funk track on the album? If not, I'm keeping my little $20 to buy something else.

Did anyone else get the CD at Circuit City? If you bought it there, you get an exclusive bonus track called "Let Go".It's a fast uptempo jam and I like it.

Right now,I'm checking out the extra stuff that comes with the disc...the downloadable song lyrics, the interview where Chaka discusses each track, etc.

Freakin' love this album; Chaka; a lot like Stevie Wonder's voice has changed during the years, but since these are real singers we're talking about, they know how to adapt to age perfectly- thats one of the goregous qualities about this cd, Chaka's voice pierces you from the opening notes of "Back In The Day" Favs include Foolish Fool, Ladies Man, You Belong to Me( With some talkbox baby!) and the bonus track Let Go. Love the covers too, though I wish there wasn't so many of them, my girl Chaka can write a song; Also i would love to see a MJB collaboration with Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam; Disrespectful tears you up! biggrin

that would be my one and only complaint about the album: There are perhaps too many covers. The original songs are superb....they didn't really need to rely so heavily on old material.

I know the type of funk that you're looking for,but I don't think you will find it here.Basically, you're looking for another "Do You Love What You Feel" lol

But if you skip this album, you'd be missing out.

I got mine at Wal-Mart (quit smirking) and it has two bonus tracks - not the "Let's Go" that you mentioned. One is "Once You Get Started" and the other is EWF's "Shining Star" -- a very nice FUNKY cover!

i went for the immediate gratification and only downloaded her cover of SOTT...i thought it started out strong then went all flabby when it went into that whole "i'm every woman" sounding stuff at the end, though i know that's chaka's style and if you're a fan, that must sound great. i just think it took away from the darkness of the original song, and she should have chosen something like "u got the look" instead if that was the tone she wanted to take with a prince classic. i think the first two minutes are modestly sublime, though!

i'm guessing i should give the rest of the album a chance, huh?

Exactly. Or another "Dance With Me", "Tearin' It Up", "You Got The Love", "Watcha Gonna Do For Me", "I Feel For You", "My Love Is Alive", or "Earth To Mickey". Dammitt, I want some jams. lol

I did my duty and picked up a copy yesterday on the way to work.

My only complaint would echo something the allmusic reviewer brought up.
There is absolutely no reason for having the "talkbox" sounding vocal in the duet with Michael McDonald (You Belong To Me). This is a tune where you have two of the most distinctive vocalists in Pop music. Their voices are enough. I would have even pulled out Chaka's ad-libs during MM's verse. One thing that threw me, reading the credits, is that Bobby Ross Avila is listed as the harmonica player on the tune. Sounds like Stevie to me.

According to the credits, it's true that Jesse Johnson is the guitarist on Castles Made of Sand (and ironically on SOTT also).

It seems like the bonus track(s) may change based on where you purchase the disc.
Walmart is listing 2 bonus tracks - Once You Get Started w/Tony Maiden (who's been added to her touring band) and Shining Star (from the Interpretations: Celebrating the Music of Earth, Wind and Fire CD )

What the hell is this? Different tracks for different stores? I'm sorry but that is messed up. I might buy it at Circuit City and might hate the bonus tracks but might love the bonus tracks on the CD at Walmart.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't planning on buying the CD from either one of those stores. I was planning on buying it from our local owned record store called Be-Bop Records (I wonder what tracks they will have). I try not to support major corporations whenever possible. lol

An interesting marketing technique to say the least.

I got mine from one of those cold heartless corporate monoliths lol , Best Buy, and didn't get any Bonus Tracks at all.

Turns out I already have Shining Star (you'd like that one) and Let's Roll.

IMO, Sign of The Times should not be covered. It's such a current piece of music that to cover it or even play it on the radio seems odd.I feel the same way about 1999.
