a little blurb from this week's Billboard magazine...
Khan Do It's great to welcome Chaka Khan back to the Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart after an absence of over 10 years as a lead artist."Angel" (Burgundy/Columbia) flies into the tally at No.58.It's Khan's first appearance on this survey as a lead artist since "Never Miss The Water" peaked at No.38 in December 1996.As a featured artist supporting De La Soul,Khan went to No.41 in December 2000 with "All Good?"."Angel" stretches Khan's R&B singles chart span to 34 years and one month, dating back to the debut of Rufus' "Whoever's Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)" in July 1973. looks like Chaka is on her way to having another Top 40 hit

(outside of the one track that's partially aimed at them) It just has too much damn music (strong vocal melodies, harmony, instruments, arrangements, etc) When you're currently used to only hearing somebody talkin loud and sayin' nothin' over a jacked beat, tracks like these could be extremely disorienting. The worst thing that could happen is some rocket scientist will decide that certain tracks need...shudder...a REMIX. You know, get rid of some of that unnecessary music and break it down to its bare essentials. Tunes like Angel and Ladies Man might even put 'em in the hospital. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 Ooooh!! CAN'T WAIT!!

Don't pre-judge the album by this cut. IMO, it's the worst track on the album. Which is a shame because the "B" section of Disrespectful is pretty good. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 I bought this song on Itunes and have been waring the funk out of it. Suprised Jimmy & Terry produced this track. Sound like it was made by Rich Harrison Havent heard no advance copies and dont want to. I will just be playing my "Pak'd My Bags" and "Blue Love" over and over until I get Chakafied on the 25th [Edited 9/15/07 22:49pm] Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

A fellow libra? Ditto. Vainandy and myself have something in common. September 25th is also my B-day. And, think ol'school P-Funk, "Balance is my Thing..." On topic, the new Chaka is just what the doctor ordered. I hear more Soul/classic RnB than Funk, but it's incredible and badly needed nontheless. Great B-day gifts, new Chaka and new Meshell. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Album Review From Allmusic.com: Three years on from Chaka Khan's recording of Classikhan with the London Symphony Orchestra, Funk This is likewise heavy on fresh looks at some of Khan's favorite songs, but its sources involve the likes of Jimi and Joni instead of Leiber & Stoller. Recorded with a core of Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Bobby Ross Avila, with guest contributions from Mary J. Blige, Michael McDonald, and Rufus guitarist Tony Maiden, Funk This sounds like much of it was recorded live, giving it a loose, not-fussed-over sound, though there are some questionable moves — like the favoring of a smoothed-out synth over a crunching guitar riff during Rufus' "You Got the Love," or the use of a talk box on McDonald's "You Belong to Me." The covers do work more often than not, highlighted by Prince's "Sign 'O' the Times" and Joni Mitchell's "Ladies Man" (an unlikely but very smart choice). There's a handful of new songs, including the nostalgic "Back in the Day," where Chaka looks back to when she was known as Yvette Stevens, and the fast and furious "Disrespectful" — where Jam and Lewis try to capture some of Rich Harrison's breakbeat-heavy "Crazy in Love"/"1 Thing" magic — but the one that sticks out most is "Hail to the Wrong," which could be mistaken for a new version of an excellent album cut from 1980's Naughty or 1981's What Cha' Gonna Do for Me. Chaka sounds mostly excellent from track to track, especially during the more relaxed moments.

Khan Breaks 10-Year Album Drought With 'Funk This' Link September 24, 2007 Billboard.com It's been nearly a decade since Chaka Khan last released a solo album, but the R&B veteran hasn't noticed. "I never really worried about it," Khan -- who releases "Funk This" on Sept 25. I was always working. I was on the road all the time. I work on the road like I have a CD out, anyway. It's been a very busy 10 years." Khan says that making a new album was simply a matter of finding the right deal. She left Reprise after 1998's "Come 2 My House" and says that since then, "I went to about three companies. We almost got to the point where we were gonna record and things got funky so I left. I just figured when it happens it'll happen, y'know? I had such bad experiences with record labels in the past that I wasn't really that anxious to get back with a label. It's when the time is right, and that's exactly how this went down." Khan wound up signing with the Sony-distributed Burgundy Records imprint and teamed up with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to make "Funk This." The album mixes originals and covers, the latter including Prince's "Sign O' the Times," Joni Mitchell's "Ladies Man," Jimi Hendrix's "Castles Made of Sand," a Rufus medley of "Pack'd My Bags" and "You Got the Love," and a duet with Michael McDonald on "You Belong to Me," which he co-wrote with Carly Simon. Khan also duets with Mary J. Blige on the track "Disrespectful," and she hopes "Funk This" fills what she feels has been a void since her last release. "People tell me that a lot, that they were missing the Chaka sound or missing my stuff," she says. "I hear that all the time. But now I'm back and they don't have to miss it any more."

i thought this album was coming out on the 25th but saw it in Kmart on friday (9/21) . saw the sticker that said new album in 10 years and thought that she was overlooking come 2 my house
but then realized it's 9 years almost 10.. i will pick it up when it's on sale lol man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Still one of the best releases of the year. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
