1980s R&B Jam of the Day: Alexander O'Neal "Fake" "Can I get some nasssss-tay bass?"
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis balladeer Alexander O'Neal threw a bomb on the dancefloor with his only No. 1 single, "Fake." The lead single from his "Hearsay" album was a throwdown song about a woman who was ... fake, as mentioned in lines such as: "Your hair was long/but now it's short/you said 'I got it cut'/but I don't see no hair on the floor." [Edited 8/1/07 20:14pm] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

One of Alex's few good songs. "Fake" is great and so is "Innocent" and "Sleigh Ride". He can keep the rest of his dull mellow ass shit. Andy is a four letter word.

I didn't care for "Love Makes No Sense", but the everything else was off tha chain. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Okay, am I the only one who loves "Criticise"?
It's way more pop than his other numbers but this song is simply irresistible. I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

Another grooving song from Alexander O'Neal's "All True Man" album was "Every Time I Get Up." I still quote a line from that song: "I get no 'E' for effort." Another song that was memorable was "Somebody (Changed Your Mind)," with the unusual drum programming pattern. On the ballad side, I loved "Hang On," which was more of a blues club feel (Jesse Johnson was the guest guitarist on that track). I got all four of O'Neal's albums on compact disc (including "All True Man") so I still spin those regularly. I wanted "Never Knew Love Like This". As we all know, it eventually got released, but I didn't think Criticize was good enough for a 2nd single. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I agree. "Criticize" was, IMO, the weakest song on the "Hearsay" album. It had to be remixed to make it more appealing and I felt it was released as the second single because the record company wanted to milk Alexander O'Neal's momentum. I also agree that "Never Knew Love Like This" should have been the second single, followed by "Sunshine." They probably couldn't figure out how someone could have a BIG #1 r&b hit and not crack the hot 100. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

"Hearsay" and "All True Man" were mostly uptempo albums, so I'm scratching my head on Vain's logic about Alexander O'Neal's music. And certainly stuff like "Never Knew Love Like This" and "All True Man" doesn't count as ballads. Also vain must have never listened to the all true man album. After buying the first album and it had only one jam on it, which was "Innocent", I wasn't going to take the chance of being burned a second time. When the second album came out and I heard "Fake" on the radio, I instantly loved it. However, I figured he would do the same thing he did with the first album....release a hard first single and then the rest of the album would be slow and midtempo songs. I waited around to see if I heard any more hard jams on the radio and I never did, so I didn't bother buying anything else from Alexander O'Neil. . . Still a classic jam and Lewis cd. this is tight jams and melodies and great production. right up there with NE Heartbreak and Janet's early stuff. ______________________________________________
