you know that's what can happen when an artist stops creating. she could have worked out all kinds of issues if she just wrote about them.

Seriously though i am so sick of her, this whole Enigma has given more credit than she really deserves. It kills me when i hear her in the same breath as Aretha or any other great RB female. Dont get me wrong, Lauryn can do it, but she chooses not too, and like an AXL ROSE, she gets this credit for what she has never done. Axl Rose is looked at as some sort of Pioneer? Dude had 2 great albums and that was it, he wnet nuts, fired everyone, got fat and just did nothing. Honestly her and Axl really should just work on album together and just never release it. This is why i dont get into Fiona Apple and Amy Whinehouse cause they are both just one step away from cracking, and never recording again, to me, i want my artists to put shit out, sorry, call me crazy, but i cant get inspired or give props to albums never done, or what might have been. she says she almost became "a civilian again." please, girl, get over yourself. you are just a singer and a crazy one at that who ain't released shit in the longest time. and the chick interviewing her..."the motherland" in reference to africa? um, gotta break it to her, lauryn's motherland is orange county, new jersey. that's her fucking motherland. people are totally out of their minds.

What's so wierd is that the interview is exactly how she has been portrayed in reports of her. She's arrogant, sanctimonius, self righteous, irony free, humorless, above it all and worst of all sounding like shit judging from the live clips on youtube. It's like she's had to protect herself from compromising against the wicked 'western' (read white) paradigm that had the temerity to give her millions of dollars, make her famous, honour her art, celebrate her beauty and she's 'saved' herself by pulling faces and poking out her tongue. Bizarre.

confidence and arrogance r 2 diff things i think a woman confident in her art would have released something by now. she said making music was different when she was with the fugees because they "believed" in what they were doing and it was genuine, in contrast to today. so, she has cracked somewhere along the line. something tells me it is arrogance/self-importance. it's like, she's not the only singer on earth, and she probably should have made some songs "3 years ago" but she wants it to be the Bible or something. i appreciate her acting as if she takes it seriously but it is JUST MUSIC and her idol Bob Marley, for all his ideals, never took that long to make anything either.

You know what some of what she says make sense. She has issues but that doesn't mean everything she says is a load of BS. The thing about certain artist over-compromising themselves is a good point. We all know quite a few artists that have done that and have ended up "lost", dont we?
Btw if she dropped the lashes and gaudy makeup she could look like that beautiful woman she once was.

To cut her some slack, it looks like the interview was a spur of the moment thing, clearly she's been media shy for several years, and in reality her comments about artistic compromise have a very familiar ring to them
I really loved Miseducation, so I guess I'm just deflated shes obviously moved sooo far from there

This is another MJ situation right here. I'm not talking about her mental state. I'm talking about the fact that she can't sing no more and no one ever mentions it. If you heard her live in the last five years you know her voice ain't there no more. As capable of self deception as these people are, they also know inside when they've lost it and that has to hurt. It's a big part of why both Mike and Lauryn can't get anything done anymore.
A singer's voice is a big part of their ego. When you've got that, it's only natural you wanna get out there and let it shine. That gives you the juice to make things happen. Now it's obvious that Lauryn has way more problems than just that, but make no mistake about it, that's a big one right there. I heard her mentioning vocal difficulties way back in 1999, and didn't know what she was talking about until I saw live footage of one of her gigs. She sounded bad, and since then the problem has only gotten worse. I love this chick though cos she's got heart and talent and we need someone like her to fly the flag for sincerity. I wish I could help, but sad to say it don't look good. I really hope she can turn things around. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

[Edited 8/3/07 16:03pm] Yes, she really can't compare to Mya, but then who can? “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

I dont think she sounds crazy at all. Judging from some of the comments here, you'd think she was licking hot lightbulbs and wearing shoes on her hands. Yeah, the make up is extreme, but she just got off stage. Maybe its her costume. I've been reading about her antics lately, and some of that stuff sounds kinda nutso, but I watched the vid for about 5 minutes and I liked the responses she gave(explaing "lose yourself, touring, her voice..) So unless I missed something..
She looked(and sounded) like Oprah in drag to me. A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

I know a lot of Black people that refer to Africa as the Motherland. Keeps us connected to our origins. [Edited 8/4/07 8:33am] A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

This video is maybe a year old, but she sounds better here than she did in the past imo. Her voice has a bit more "pain" behind it and when you go back and listen to her older performances her voice was good but it was a lot lighter, if you know what I mean. http://www.youtube.com/wa...EZ_Th-zf8Y Studiotraffic-One of the fastest ways to get payed on the net!
