Fake accents in Rock

Is it acceptable to sing in a fake accent if it suits the genre, or should artists be truer to themselves?

Some fakers:

Mick Jagger - Many, many examples, but one that stands out for me is in "Dear Doctor" from Beggar's Banquet - "aAH bin smokin', anna drink lahk a SPERNGE".
Jagger's from Dartford, about 25 miles away, and beleive me, they don't sound like that

Hair bands like Def Leppard ("Paw serm sug-ah orn MEEAH")

Shane McGowan from the Pogues. Irish roots, but in conversation he's a Londoner

Sting, to my knowledge was not brought up in Kingston, Jamaica

Green Day, The Killers, Sum 41 - I could go on all day...

No offense to my girl Tina Turner, But she was born in Nutbush,TN and she has cultivated an accent that has hints of Welsh extract via London undertones.

WTF?

I understand this, but but hers is a little ridiculous. It sounds very praticed, and we ain't talking about a twang here and there. It sounds very unnatural.

thank you! i never understood why she gets so much shit for this. seriously, do you not think if you lived somewhere for almost 20 years that eventually you may sound that way as well?

also, Bret Michael's from Poison now seems to have a southern accent and to my knowledge is not from the south nor does he live there.

Slick Rick's accent was real, but Dana Dane was born and raised in BROOKLYN. He was in a group with Slick Rick at some point though.

seriously, its a valid thread. The Beatles did rock n' roll/r n' b but sang in their own liverpuddlian accents, for example.

I agree. I think it's something people always wonder about, but nobody wants to bring up cause they don't want offened nobody. I mean seriously, has this not come up in some people's conversations sometimes?

Please don't get me wrong, I LOVE Tina Turner, but she sounds clipped and so extra British that she makes Elton John sound like HE'S from Tennessee!!!!!

IN 1982 I thought Prince was British, because of the way he said "Why do I love you so much?" in Automatic.

Also, lots of British singers tried to emulate the American sound, like The Beatles in Twist & Shout vs Eleanor Rigby or A Day In The Life (where they let their heritage shine)

At first I thought that Jack White was English. He sometimes sounds like it in interviews. Also, though he's not an actor, Johnny Depp has a slight english accent these days, but he does live in France, so that might explain it.
