Your 10 favorite Luther Vandross songs

In contrast to the more satirical threads regarding Luther Vandross, how about one naming your 10 favorite songs from one of the most revered soul singers ever? There will be quite a few named, but let me show my list:

1.) "'Til My Baby Comes Home." It's good to hear Luther on an uptempo song, one that pays homage to the juke joint songs with the organ playing. A lively sing-along.

2.) "For You to Love." It's not as immediately recognizeable as some of his other ballads, but I love how clean his vocals are on this tune. I love the laid-back, breezy feel.

3.) "I Can Make It Better." I feel this song is more spirited and fiery than his classic ballads; Luther sings with a lot more attitude and actually sounds pissed-off.

4.) "Since I Lost My Baby." My favorite of all of Luther's covers, he takes the David Ruffin tune and makes a rendition so sparkling that he co-opts it as his own.

5.) "Never Too Much." The song that started it all.

6.) "So Amazing." Another brilliant composition where Vandross seems to float effortlessly on the song's melody.

7.) "Any Love." A melancholy song where Vandross' vocals are paired with a little more somber rhythm arrangement. I always looked at this song as an insight into his personal struggles.

8.) "If Only for One Night/Creepin'." Another brilliant cover, this one of the Brenda Russell song, coupled with a strong performance of the Stevie Wonder tune.

9.) "My Sensitivity (Gets in the Way)." A smooth mid-tempo with Vandross' vocals gliding along. I love the scatter-picking guitar in the background.

10.) "Don't You Know That?" Another standout from his debut album.

"Never Too Much" (1981)
"You Stopped Loving Me" (1981)---Many of my favorite Luther tracks are the songs that never became singles. This is one of them.
"A Better Love" (1982)
"Since I Lost My Baby" (1982)---Luther was one of the few singers who could re-make a song and actually make you forget the original version.
"Make Me A Believer" (1983)---This song is dreamy and heavenly...it just might be my favorite Luther Vandross song of all.
"So Amazing" (1986)---Luther's songs make you want to be in love. How can anyone hear this song and not get caught up in what's he singing?
"There's Nothing Better Than Love" with Gregory Hines (1986)---see my comment above.
"Any Love" (1988)---this song is haunting and sad....it moves me evertime I hear it.....what a world for the lonely kind
"I Want The Night To Stay" (1991)
"Love Me Again" (1993)

It was hard picking just ten songs,so I'm now gonna list 10 more additional favorites lol

***"Sugar and Spice (I Found Me A Girl)" (1981)---Nobody ever talks about this song, but I've always liked it alot.Like "Never Too Much",it's catchy and infectious, with a strong hook. The bridge is my favorite part.
***"Don't You Know That" (1981)---In the late 70s,Luther sang backup vocals on the Chic albums. This song sounds very Chic-inspired....a nice, breezy midtempo jam that would have fit perfectly on Chic's 'Risque' album.
***"Forever,For Always,For Love" (1982)---If I were a singer in the music business today,I would raid Luther's albums, looking for songs to cover. One day, someone is gonna re-make this song and turn it into the major hit it deserves to be.
***"Superstar/Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" (1983)---As I said above, when Luther re-made a song,he made it his OWN.You forget all about the original version."Superstar" was recorded by a few artists before Luther covered it but as far as I'm concerned, his version is the definitive version!!
***"If Only For One Night/Creepin" (1985)---Another example of Luther's amazing ability to remake a song and actually improve it.Who else could remake a Stevie Wonder song ("Creepin") and make it sound just as good as the original?
***"She Loves Me Back" (1982)---Even though his ballads get all the attention,Luther can groove too.
***"I'd Rather" (2001)---Unlike many of his 80s R&B peers,Luther was still making great music well into this decade. This is one of his last great ballads.
***"The Other Side Of The World" (1985)---On another recent thread,I pointed out that even Luther's non-singles get alot of attention on R&B/Quiet Storm radio stations. This song is a prime example. It's a moody, hypnotic ballad that has rightfully become a Quiet Storm staple.
***"Don't Wanna Be A Fool" (1991)---I never really cared for "The Power Of Love/Love Power" but I think this follow-up single is classic Luther.
***"Because It's Really Love" (1986)---Without question,Luther's 'Give Me The Reason' album is his masterpiece....his strongest, most consistent album. This is one those filler-free albums where EVERY track could have been a single. In fact,in my area, every track received alot of airplay and attention."Because It's Really Love" is just one of the many highlights from this album.

Oh hell, did he even make 10 that I like? lol Let me think real hard about this one. Here goes.

1. The Glow Of Love (with Change)
2. She's A Super Lady
3. Searchin' (with Change)
4. She Loves Me Back
5. Never Too Much
6. I've Been Working
7. Bad Boy (Having A Party)
8. Sugar and Spice
9. If This World Were Mine (with Cheryl Lynn)
10. A House Is Not A Home

I had to think real hard about that one because I mainly only like stuff from Luther's first album, his work producing other artists, and a song or two of his own. He later became one of those Shitney style artists. lol

I remember "Sugar and Spice". It ain't no Lakeside or anything, but for Luther Vandross, it's decent. lol

Exactly. That song is the only reason I bought that album.

And I'm not too crazy about the two slows I listed. I needed something to complete the top 10 list. lol

I could tolerate some of his early 80s slow stuff but I absolutely hated his late 80s, 90s, and 2000s stuff.

His type of slow stuff never was my taste anyway. I mainly only like a few of his uptempo songs and some of his work with other artists. My type of slow jams are usually from male falsetto groups from the 70s such as The Stylistics, Blue Magic, Switch, or Heatwave....or the slow jams from funk groups such as Cameo, The Barkays, Prince, Rick James, Con-Funk-Shun, etc.

Najee was right about Luther's music being more conservative and Andy don't do conservative....period. However, Luther did have a small funky side to him in the midst of all that conservative shit.....which is more than I can say for a certain goodie two shoes who was totally 100% conservative. You know, it's like an orgasm for me to shit on her. lol

That's the reason I like songs like "My Sensitivity (Gets in the Way)," "'Til My Baby Comes Home" and "It's Over" from Luther Vandross' "The Night I Fell in Love" album. Even some of his mid-tempo stuff like the title track and ballads like "Wait for Love" sounded more rhythmic than some of his later stuff.
