I fully agree with you!! Flea is an amazing and unique player. I am also very surprised no one has mentioned Les Claypool from Primus. That man next to Bootsy has to be one of the craziest bassists around.

Im glad to see that at least one person put John Entwisle`s name on this thread. I was getting ready to have Ian remove this entire thread if I didnt see his name!!! I have heard Pete Townsend mention more than once that without Entwisle the Who would have never made it big. My DC Direct wishlist: 1) Bane, 2) Prof Zoom, 3) Superman Blue, 4) Kilowag, 5) Parasite

Oh yeah, another great yet uderrated New Wave bassist would have to be Leigh Gorman from Bow Wow Wow. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

My favourites include Louis Johnson and Me'shell Ndegéocello but Jaco Pastorius is certainly the best. M.2.K

In terms of sheer ability, Pastorius takes some beating.
As 4 the competition 4 his crown the usual suspects r already listed on this thread (Bootsy,Larry,Bernie Edwards,Mingus,Jamerson,Clarke,Entwhistle,Wooten). I'll pass on McCartney however, because, hugely talented though he undoubtedly is, his melodic playing can b a tad on the busy side 4 my taste(or lack of it). Hitherto unmentioned unsung heroes who rarely if ever get their props r Danny Thompson, Chris Squire & Steve Rodby, who r the able anchormen 4 the Richard Thompson Band,Yes & Pat Metheny Group respectively.
