John Mayer is starting to bore me.

I liked this dudes music at first, but having to hear him constantly on the radio is getting me agitated. I seemed to like him better when he was a cult thing. But I do still dig him--Just not as much.

I am exactly where you are. I have hardly listened to him since I saw him live (even though he rocked it). I think the overexposure syndrome has infected me.

Well, in 6 months, it'll go away and I figure I can 'rediscover' him then...

OK, I have a million friends who are gonna kill me for this, but-
I fought the John Mayer thing for a long, long time, for reasons that are still unclear to me. For some reason whenever I heard him, I just could never get into it. I have quite a few friends who were into him pretty hardcore for a while, and I never got it. They tried and tried, and I continually resisted.
However, he's starting to grow on me now. The 2 singles I've heard on the radio are catchy and happy. I notice myself singing along. Myabe it's cause everything on the radio these days is such out and out crap, that it stands out as at least mediocre. Ah well. Doesn't mean I'm gonna rush right out and buy up everything he's put out, but I don't hate him anymore.

At least you didn't say "I told you so!"

And anyway- you know I never like new music. At the rate I usually go, I'll be buying his albums to catch up in about a year and a half. wink

ROBERT RANDOLPH FAMILY BAND is the best (if not ONLY) reason to go see John Mayer.

RRFB is the hottest fixture out on the jamband scene, today. Leader Robert Randolph plays the pedal steel guitar (which lays flat on a mini-table) with a modern update. The music comes direct from gospel Sacred Stel songbook and back in 200 Robert was playing in African American Penetecostal church in Orange , NJ. The music is full throttle jammin' with a stong taste of blues, jazz and funk. He is joined by his brother and cousins (hence "Family Band"). He recently received excellent write-ups at the Bonaroo Fest in Colorado this summer and his LIVE AT THE WETLANDS has been widely hailed. He can also be found on John Medeski's THE WORD and the Blind Boys of Alabama cd, HIGHER GROUND (which features covers of tunes by Prince, Funkadelic, Stevie WOnder adn Earth, Wind & Fire).

He's currently opening for John Mayer on the following tour dates in November

I think John Mayer's pretty cool -- good with melody and a nice turn of phrase. What more could you ask for in a pop singer?

Oh, and he plays guitar like a beast!!!

I've cooled on him a little bit myself, but he has got something. I could do without hearing "No Such Thing" anymore, but the rest of his stuff is cool and he rocks live.

I rarely listen to the radio except for NPR, so I'm not sick of Mayer yet. He is great in the studio, and even better live, which is rare for a young pop-ish artist, IMHO.

I think the guy is rather talented, and he is a good songwriter as well. I bought his album a couple of weeks ago, and it remains a virtually permanent fixture in my CD player.

I guess I should say that I have only heard his first single twice on the radio, and I have never seen any of his videos, so overexposure is not really an issue for me yet...

I didn't and still don't like the first single. I think that's what is causing the boredom. His second single "Your Body is a Wonderland" grabbed my ear. I don't think I'll ever get tired of that song. The other songs are just as good. Something about the first single was just a bad song to introduce to the music fans.
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

I've got his CD and I enjoy it. It's not a permanent fixture or anything, but it's something I could pull out once a month and enjoy then put it away. It's an excellent debut album (though I understand he had an independent EP release a couple years ago).

Overexposure isn't a problem for me because I almost never listen to radio (if you have a CD player in the car, why would you?) I keep MTV viewing to a minimum as well.

'John Mayer is starting to bore me.'

I forgot to mention that this is what happened to me with Dave Matthews Band back in '96/97 when the rest of the world around me overplayed their stuff like crazy. Four years later or so, I've started coming back around to the group, but if I heard it everyday I would go nuts.

John Mayer has a very similar sound to that band, too.

Yeah, that's probably the best song on the album. Along with the very last song, My Stupid Mouth, and City Love.

Isn't he that guy that like a "90210" version of Dave Matthews? He needs to form a group with Ben Folds.
