Babyface is a master at slow jams.I remember some of his songs with The Deele..."I'll Send You Roses","Just My Luck" and of course "Two Occassions"!! "Whip Appeal" (12" Version with the fingersnaps from the video) and "Where Will You Go" are my favorites, but all of Tender Lover's side 2 is slow-jam heaven.I just got the promo copy of Whip Appeal from ebay. It contains the "Performance Mix" of the track. It is the track used in the video. It is much better than the 12" or Ultimate Whip versions. I'm surprised nobody mentioned it already, but for those of you who think Face fell off after "The Day," (which I will agree to some degree he did). You should try and find his unreleased album from 2004, "Love Story." It is simply amazing!
It's full of midtempo-to-slow-jams (there's no fast tracks on this one), but it brings back memories of the old Babyface circa "Tender Lover" and "For The Cool in You," without sounding dated at all. When I was on my college newspaper, my Managing Editor burned a copy for me (he downloaded it from somewhere) and I couldn't put it away!!!! This album was much better than the "Grown and Sexy" album he released two years later. The cuts are "God Must Love You," "Red Dress," "Together Forever," "Still My Boo," "Sentimental Reasons." I LOVE "A Love Story". Red Dress, God Must Love You, The Getting To Know You, Makin' Love and God Must Love You are true masterpieces. I cannot find the physical cd of it. I always thought that "Where Will You Go," was a little boring. It defintely has some Babyface's more understated vocals, but I always thought the lyrics were a little uninspired. "On Our Own," is cool, but not one of his best. When you hear stuff like Roni, Rock Witcha and Don't Be Cruel fromthe same era,it pales in comparison. | |
