QUESTION FOR NON PRINCE FORUM

Okay I'm curious about why most of the peeps in the Non Prince forum haven't said much about Planet Earth over in M&M

I know that forum is considered by many to be the "dark side" lol is that the reason???

I'm asking because most of the people whose musical opinions I find interesting are on this particular forum.

What gives???
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I have offered alot of thought over there, but every argument or critique seems to come down to comparisons with older work and past triumphs, i think its hard for people to get past the PR and SOTT days, which were great, but they are memories now, and everyone should just look at this album as a new piece of work by a 49 year old Prince not the 25 year old Prince they wish was hear. I think secretly people want Prince to take them back to their own past, well thats alot to put on one guy, as i have said before, when you compare album to album you are always gonna be let down in some way. So thats why i dont post too much there because everything is about where he debuts, how much he sells, what the cover looks like, or the old SOTT arguments.

Yeah, the endless comparisons kinda wore on my nerves too. That's the very reason why I was looking forward to more comments from this side of the aisle.

I think it's his best album in ten years. I haven't heard The Rainbow Children, but I've heard the rest and it was like watching the last fights of Mike Tyson. That might technically have been Mike Tyson, but really it was just a pale shadow. The greatness was gone. Same went for P's output post 98. This album though is actually kind of enjoyable in it's own way. Only a fool at this point would be expecting him to return to PR, SOTT levels of inspiration, but there's some nice stuff on here. The only out and out turkey is Future Baby Mama (though I like the beat).

From what I can tell, many posters in this forum fall into 1 of the following categories:

1)Have never been a fan of Prince or his music.

2)Used to be Prince fans but aren't anymore and could care less what he does now.

3)Don't like to visit PM&M because they think a large percentage of the orgers over there are purple Koolaid drinkers.

I think I fall into the third category.

I’m a long time Prince fan currently enjoying Planet Earth as I enjoy his older work and am thankful for the work he continues to put out. As for why I don’t post on PM&M, I’ll say #3 along with it being like a high school cafeteria and not being able to live in the ’now’.

Don't you think that most came here initially because of P?

2)Used to be Prince fans but aren't anymore and could care less what he does now.

That sounds more likely.

3)Don't like to visit PM&M because they think a large percentage of the orgers over there are purple Koolaid drinkers.

That's the most likely reason right there. lol but I really was looking forward to more input from this side of the fence.

Miles

I personally enjoyed the 'Planet Earth' album, but I'm finding it doesn't hold my attention like most of his 80s and '90s albums did. After a few plays, I've found the tracks I like, such as the title track, which, while not original for P. is powerful imo, and 'Guitar', which imo has the potential to be a major hit single.

I also like 'Somewhere Here On Earth' and 'All the Midnights in the World'. The rest I either don't like that much or they seem to blend into one mush of vaguely '60s-meets-'80s pop rock a la 'I Could Never the Place of Your Man', but not as good.

No doubt, like all P albums, I will return to it in the future, maybe even reassess it, but for me, apart from a few tracks it's better than 'Musicology' (imo one of his weakest albums) but not as good as '3121', which I found to be a strong record if you skip the formula R n' B pap with that protege singer whose name escapes me right now. Tamar, that's it!! smile

I found PE to be pleasant but unexceptional. Some good guitar work in places tho. Well worth the £1.40 I spent on it free with the 'Mail on Sunday' tho! biggrin

I've been waiting for him to take the warm, jazz rocky/ funky 'Rainbow Children' sound to the next phase, or do something less commercial and more 'experimental', but bar the odd moment production-wise on '3121', no sign of P reclaiming his avant-pop throne, it seems, like Bowie did in the '90s to a extent.

I'd almost never write P. off tho. As we saw with 'Rainbow Children' and other works from that 2001-2003 era, he still has it in him to surprise us musically or with the renewed quality of his music, I think.

Imo, he is producing work in his late '40s which is definitely superior to that released by many other great artists at that age, such as James Brown and the Rolling Stones, both of whom were more or less 'over the hill' as interesting recording artists by that age. He still imo drops at least one or two great songs on each new album, which is no mean feat for a man 30 years into a hugely prolific career.

To be honest, this record bores me. I'm a fan of the FUNK and this record is not funky. Chelsea Rogers is okay but not a repetitive listen for me, either. Prince has been hit and miss for years now. While I do him the honor of a full listen, I don't hold his material in high regards because its not what it used to be. I would imagine the comparisons to his old material is because this record sounds OLD. Maroon 5 put out a funkier record than Prince this year. What's up with that?

Thanks for all of your responses so far...very interesting.

For me it's a little like what Miles said. I like PE much more than Musicology but not as much as 3121. I only liked half the songs on PE to begin with, my favorite being Planet Earth and SHOE. Other than that my interest is already waning and I've gone back to 3121.

As others have stated I won't count P out just yet though...he's still kickin a-- live as I witnessed on 777 and an album more to my liking could be just around the corner. cool

When people talk about an artists music not being as good as their earlier work, how come they never account for the fact that they as a listener, have also changed? The same artists that impressed and grabbed your attention at 16, 20 or 25 may not still thrill you at 30, 35 and 40 even though they may be still putting out good work.

While it seems that artists may lose a little something over time, I also consider that I'm definitely not the same person I was when I first heard 1999. I've seen and heard more, my priorities have changed as well as my musical interests, and the way I listen, hear and interpret music, etc.

I like PE more than 3121 but not quite as much as Musicology. Overall his last few releases havent been that strong to me. Has he lost some oomph? Probably. He's damn near 50 and not the same man or musician and obviously things change. I still think his music is more interesting and better than a lot of the stuff that's currently out. Instead of highlighting that Prince doesn't do this or that anymore, I'm still grateful for what he is doing.
