Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes appreciation thread! I don't think I've ever seen a Blue Notes thread on here so I'm starting one.
These brotha's was bad back in the day (my pops sent them perform). They "sang" with that raw emotion that most soul groups song with and that damn near no one does today. They were releasing chart single's way back in the 50's buit once drummer Teddy P put down those sticks, the Blue Note's really became one of the top groups produced by Gamble & Huff. Some of my favs: - Be For Real - The Love I lost - Nobody Could Take Your Place - If You Don't Know Me by Now - I Miss You Damn Harold Mel and Teddy P. as the two front-men, shit!!! [Edited 7/28/07 21:42pm] PRINCE: Always and Forever
MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever ----- Live Your Life How U Wanna Live It

Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes were probably the greatest soul vocal group of the '70s BESIDES the O'Jays.
I love the breakdown part to "I Miss You" when Harold gives a smooth rap and Teddy is basically on his knees or on the ground HOLLERING and SCREAMING for his woman to come back to him. Great contrast. Love their original version of "Don't Leave Me This Way". And I loved how they kicked it into high gear on "The Love I Lost" (when they go I lost it...sorry I lost it) and "Wake Up Everybody" (Teddy kicked BUTT on that one in particular). And "If You Don't Know Me By Now" as much as it's talked about, you can never stop talking about it. GREAT SONG! RIP to Harold (1939-1997) though. [Edited 7/28/07 23:46pm]

Hey, Timmy....It's actually "If You Don't Know Me By Now," but no matter, it is totally a bad jam! It's one of my favorites, along with: Wake Up Everybody To Be True I Hope That We Can Be Together Soon I Miss You BAD LUCK! and have mercy.... BE FOR REAL!! Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

Yeah, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes is where Teddy Pendergrass made his name. He gave some tremendous vocal performances on some of those songs; whenever I make a Teddy Pendergrass compilation I include his Blue Notes work. My favorite songs, in no particular order:
* "If You Don't Know Me by Now" * "I Miss You" * "Tell the World How I Feel about 'Cha Baby" * "Wake Up Everybody" * "Where Are My Friends" * "Satisfaction Guaranteed (or Take Your Love Back)" * "Yesterday I Had the Blues" * "Bad Luck" * "Don't Leave Me This Way" * "The Love I Lost" * "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon (featuring Sharon Paige)" * "I'm Weak for You" THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

This song was always on the radio around this time.

They were a great group. I really love the "Black and Blue" album as well as their debut. I would highly suggest that u guys check out Teddy's autobiography. It is very informative as to why he left the Bluenotes. He also discusses about the drugs, missing money and more.
