60s Flashback Song of the Day - (Elephant's Memory - Mongoose) Don't know why but this tune jumped into my head this morning.
A band out of the East Village of NYC that had connections to Carly Simon and John Lennon. ...Take It To The Streets (*1970) *I've called this a "60s Flashback" because although this song came out in 1970, I consider them a 60s band. A very strange but interesting record to end up on an AM radio playlist even then. But that's probably the very thing that attracted me to it. That and the Voodoo Child (Slight Return) wah-wah. Mongoose (Youtube Clip w/background info) In the village of the jungle Lies a body cold and dead For the venom of the cobra Has gone in the body dead Rock and hill a little girl As she cries all around For the snake has killed the father Tell me where it can be found MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! Then all the people sound the drums Call the mongoose from his lair Through the jungle he flies alone To a tunnel on a hill In the dark the cobra waits And his eyes glow red Like a flash comes the mongoose For the battle head to head MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! Said the mongoose to the cobra "See that panther in that tree" As the cobra turned its head Mongoose caught it in his teeth Then the people started singing For the snake killed them all Cobra eggs now are hatching Baby cobras back for more! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! The intro (not counting the piano section) sounds like a sample-head's dream. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 [Edited 7/24/07 13:45pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. If you can get past any preconceived notions of Yoko Ono's talent, try listening to her 'Approximately Infinite Universe' album. Elephant's Memory play throughout.
There's an interesting article on some of the album's lyrics here: http://www.furious.com/PE...koono.html and try listening to a sample of 'I Have A Woman Inside My Soul' from the album at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/App.../B000009RJ It's the only Yoko song that I seem to successfully hip people to!

It's the only Yoko song that I seem to successfully hip people to! Thanks. I'll give it a listen. And don't look so forlorn. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

this is strangly New York sounding during the chorus, I hear Talking Heads meets pyschedelic Funk.
and this song came to you during a flashback? "A Hippie From New York City" http://www.youtube.com/wa...ed&search=

and this song came to you during a flashback? Definitely a progressive groove for AM radio at the time. Well, LSD was in vogue back then so you'd have to expect a flashback every now and again. "A Hippie From New York City" http://www.youtube.com/wa...ed&search= As one of the commentators noted, this is actually John & Yoko along with David Peel & The Lower East Side. Their main claim to fame was a tune that got played from their... ...Have A Marijuana album. The tune was I Like Marijuana and got spun on 60s Free Form Radio. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Thank You Teach, this is why we hold your posts in such high esteem. I've never heard of the band prior to this clip, but whoever was holding down that bass line thump hooked me in. Was this their only release and is this a really hard one to find, I'd love to hear the rest of the album? Jeux Sans Frontiers

Jammin' tune alright. To tell you the truth T, they've had a few albums out, but this is the only song of theirs that I remember. It's just one of those weird tunes that got stored in this old head and for some reason a synapse fired that morning and brought it back to memory. The album it's from would probably be very difficult to find which is why when I discovered it was up on YouTube, it immediately got copied. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Well, we can agree that this is a gem. It's worth a trip to Aomeba Records to see if they have a viynl copy, which also means I need to buy a record player too. Jeux Sans Frontiers
