Yea, apparently. Guess I'm blind to ignorant bullshit smile
Anyways, I'm white, 20 years old and from Finland of all places and I absolutely love funk.

You live overseas. I've always heard that people are more open-minded overseas when it comes to music than they are here in the United States. You're also young but you seem to have a mind of your own with your own tastes and aren't afraid to voice them even if other people don't like it. You remind me of a young "me". lol

To the extent that race is raised in this debate . . .

I bet that a good chunk of the funk audience is white. My personal observations are that my brethren and sistren in the "majority" are a key force in keeping the most forward-looking genres of black music alive.

Take a look into a jazz club, and invariably, you'll find that half the audience is white. It could be argued, datdude, that jazz is the "blackest" genre of them all. Many if not most folk these days hear a fusion album and think it's "jazz," as opposed to swing or bop. It could also be argued that today, white patrons support those seminal subgenres of jazz as much if not more than the communities that spawned them. You may find the same is true with a lot of blues clubs.

I'd put even money on the proposition that, in the future, more white listeners will use their patronage to help keep funk alive, or who knows, maybe revitalize it.

But commercially, rap is cheaper to record and market. That has a lot to do with it.

When funk died, having gone through many different style changes in R&B music such as early 70s R&B (which they played every now and then on R&B stations in the 1980s), blues, disco, funk, rap (fast rap), and house music, I refused to accept some slow boring music like shit hop. Shit hop is all these kids know so they aren't going to go looking for something else.

You know what's ironic? The artist that may be the most influential in modern hip-hop history mined the funk catalogues, slowed the tempo, and made tons of money.

By using the funk as his backbone, he may have stolen its potential audience.

I'm as a big a funk fan as you can get (grew up listening to Zapp & Roger, Cameo, Slave, P-Funk etc)....but I come from a music industry family....I'm mixed-race British-Asian (English and Indian)...and I'm 20.

I love playing funk to other people my age that only really know hip-hop and seeing them get confused when they try to work out where they've heard that riff or melody before....lol

its funny when some people start to insult you just because you said something they don't like.
first of all i think that black people are the most talented musicians.
i never ever heard bad black guitar player for example.
i heard milion bad white guitar players.
but for some reason a lot of black people now days don't give a shit about funk or rock.
it's a sad thing because black people invented those genres.

belive it or not now days on jazz and funk concerts you'll hear more white people then black.
recently kool and a gang had concert in belgrade, former yugoslavia.
they had 10000 people come to their show
10000 white people.

Another thing to take into consideration is that most music defined as funk came in the late 1960s through early 1980s, when most regular members on The Org weren't even born. A lot of time it's a matter of not having a frame of reference.
THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

Unfortunately, that's the future I see for funk and it's not the future I want for it. I see it ending up like jazz or blues and start being considered part of "the arts" with a few curious white people exploring other "cultures".

Funk was a strong rhythmic music that was meant for life and ass shakin' in clubs and parties. It should always be mainstream in some form on R&B radio instead of a bunch of slow ass shit hop that you can't do nothing with other than just "sit and listen". That shit's for the birds.

Down here in Mississippi, it's a little different than the rest of the world because most of the current blues artists live here and there is a radio station that promotes the hell out of the blues. Most black people my age listen to either blues or the "soft soul" station that plays mostly slow shit from the late 80s, 90s, and today....(yawn).

What you have to realize is, we are huge music lovers here on the org. We have bought music for years, have kept all our old music, and continuously look for more old music that we don't already have. Most of the world isn't as serious about music as we are here on the org. They don't have the huge music collections to turn to that we have so they have to depend on whatever bullshit the radio stations feed them.

i LOVE this quote. thanks jack the improv. you helped bring clarity to the idea of 'groove deafness' making something "inaccessible" to those who are.

i agree it isn't a black white thing per se, but perhaps proportionately so in the sense of "groove deafness"

Groove-deafness you know he wasn't being serious...

its an aquired taste...
And not all funk is good...
the vast majority of funk released was absolute swill...
thats why it died quickly...
The problems with funk were, it wasn't lyrically or vocally substantial.
Prince healed this with adding good to decent lyrics, and fusing the rock counterpart.

Me personally i have to be in a certain mood to listen to funk, its not one of those genres i can listen to or play everyday...
simply because im lyrically and vocally oriented...
and tend to lean towards harmony and melody than actual rhythm...
etc...
which is why some people don't like funk

I relate to much of what you're saying, though there's no reason why groove and melody have to be mutually exclusive. Curtis, Prince, Stevie, Sly; they all showed that. Even Jam and Lewis's stuff fused funk with great melodies and lyrics.

Melodies and lyrics are fine but I see them as completely worthless if a song does not make my ass have a mind of it's own and want to shake before my brain can even think about it.

Music is for the ass, lyrics are for the brain. Music lovers should listen to funk. Lyric lovers should buy a book of poetry. lol

You sound like some kind of ignorant, musical fascist. I like a tune. I love a great beat too. If preferable I'd rather have both, but I'm with Stevie Wonder who said "It's the melody of a song that touches the heart".

There sure is, like sex. I love some slow jams from folks like Prince, Rick James, Cameo, Heatwave, Switch, The Stylistics, Blue Magic, Normon Conners, etc. Music is great for sex too.

I guess I should make a correction then, if a song don't touch my ass or my dick, then it's worthless. I ain't got time for none of this..."sit and listen to a song and think about how beautiful it is"...(yawn)...type of music. lol

I hate funk. My husband LOVES it and plays it 24/7. I'm not converted though. It's something I don't enjoy... simple as...
