definitely one of the best songs this year, that goes for both umbrella and don't stop the music cause of the mj sample smile

umbrella is all over the radio still, it's hard to get away from but I still love it and haven't gotten sick of it like I thought I would have by now. I love the harmonies in the chorus and how it builds up as the song goes on. It makes me think of the 80's for some reason, anyone else feel like that?

I've only heard it four times. First when someone posted a link to it here on the org, then two times on Live Earth, and just now when I checked it out on You Tube. It's the chorus I really love. You just don't hear choruses like that anymore. I also love the whole umbrella image. It's a novel idea to hang a lyric on.

I seriously think the appetite for proper songs is as great now as it ever was, but the industry has been infiltrated by people who Just Can't Do It. That means the younger audience has been raised on non melodies and lazy lyrics, and yet when songs come along that hint at those old school values, like Gnarles Barkley's Crazy, some of Kelly Clarkson's stuff, and even Rehab to some extent, they tend to do really well.

I have a habit of turning on the radio while driving, to check for traffic and all and that way I get to hear what's on. I like to catch old school music at times too and I hear prince every now and then

I agree that umbrella's melody is strong though it doesn't compare to old school

It's a really weird sounding record, those synths, loud rock drum break

It's a very good song. It really doesn't need the guest rap at the beginning though - that's the trashy commercial aspect of it, not the arrangements or Rihanna's vocal arrangement.

lol, I was saving that point for later, but you got there first. The rap is the one thing that should not be there. I'm reminded of Beyonce saying she brought Jay Z in on Crazy In Love because she didn't think people would accept it otherwise. The same is true of this song. The rap is on there for marketing reasons, not musical ones. I really think people underestimate the audience in that way. This song did not need that nonsense at the beginning to make it a hit. Still, that's the beauty of a fast forward button.

I'm not crazy about the beat, especialy that cheap sounding open hat or cymbal sound that's on the first beat of every bar in the verse, but I love the synths and guitars. It reminds me of a time when pop music wasn't afraid to be dramatic. This is the first time in years I've heard a pop/rnb song with some drama to it. Everyone's been so obsessed with "keeping it real" they forgot that pop music ain't about realness, it's about escape from the mundane. It's about rubbing up your emotions.

Hey, whatever, this is 2007. Beats should've moved on further than that. I still ain't heard nothing to touch Prince's old school beats or Jam & Lewis's beats or even James Brown's funky drummer. The ironic thing is beats have been lame now for years, and yet the emphasis has never been more on beats. Weird.

Jay-z is no fool, he saw a hit, tacked a rap on the beginning and gets co-writing royalties as a result.

Someone explain to me why this song is "good." What are the compositional technqiues so deftly fused that makes this tune well written?

I can wait.....
