If u wanna get technical,HIStory was a flop.HIStory may have sold that much, but Sony spent $30 million in promotion. It may have recouped the amount based on international sales(which were ALOT better), but in the US History was disappointing. That said, I would have put Invincible on the list instead. It sold slightly less, actually cost the label alot more money than HIStory did, and at least HIStory managed to score a no.1 hit. Granted, "Butterflies" could have been a BIG hit, but Sony seriously fucked up there.

You bring up a good point. The reason why MJ's recent albums are considered flops is because of how much money he spent on them.If an artist spends $30 million to make an album,it would need to sell an outrageous amount of copies (say,60 million or more) just to re-coup the investment. His albums have a massive budget and he spends years in recording studios, working with expensive producers and songwriters. It's obvious that Sony lost a fortune on 'HIStory' and 'Invincible'.

as for 'Rave'....it was a huge flop because Clive Davis paid Prince a whopping $11 million for it.The album didn't make hardly any money for Arista.

I would love to know how much money was spent on the likes of Thriller and Off The Wall? I mean even if we took into account inflation I am sure they didn't cost a fraction to make like subsequent albums.

yes MJ moved into a different league after that! and thriller only took a few weeks to record from scratch!
His next album won't be out for another 3-4yrs

What I am saying all these high costs and 5 yrs gaps to produce an album doesn't make the album any better or more successful commercially.

The thing about Dylans 'Self Portrait' is that he deliberately created an album to alienate the psychotic hippie lunatics who were demanding him to lead some kind of counter culture revolution. It did what it was supposed to do.

Still..
Its a good album...
