Very Old Song of the Day: "And When I Die" by Blood, Sweat and Tears

Actually, I just read online that this song was written by Laura Nyro when she was 17 years old. This is a great song that popped into my head tonight for some reason. I've always liked this song.

And When I Die, Written by Laura Nyro
But Sung By Blood Sweat and Tears (and Peter, Paul and Mary, too)

I'm not scared of dying
and I, don't really care
if it' s peace you find in dying,
well then, let the time be near

If it's peace you find in dying,
well then dying time is near
just bundle up my coffin,
'cause it's
cold way down there,
I hear that it's
cold way down there, yeah
crazy cold, way down there

And when I die, and when I'm gone
there'll be, one child born
in this world
to carry on, to carry on

[Piano Solo]

Now troubles are many
there as
deep as a well
I can swear there ain't no Heaven
but I pray there ain't no hell
Swear there ain't no Heaven
and I'll pray there ain't no hell
but I'll never know by livin'
only my dyin' will tell, yes only my
dyin' will tell, oh yeah,
Only my dyin' will tell

And when I die, and when I'm gone
there'll be, one child born, in this world
to carry on, to carry on
yeah yeah

[Instrumental Solo]

Give me my freedom
for as long as I be
All I ask of livin'
is to have no chains on me
All I ask of livin'
is to have no chains on me
And all I ask of dyin' is to
go natrually, only wanna
go naturally
Here I go!
hey hey
Here come the devil
right behind
look out children, here he come
here he come, heyyy

Don't wanna go by the devil
don't wanna go by the demon
don't wanna go by satan
don't wann die uneasy
just let me go
naturally

And when I die, and when I'm dead
dead and gone
there'll be
one child born, in our world
to carry on, to carry on

I just read online that Laura also wrote "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Wedding Bell Blues". Never knew that, but I like both songs.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Well let's get with it young lady...

...Eli and the Thirteenth Confession thumbs up!

You can add Eli's Coming (covered by Three Dog Night) and Stoney End (covered by Barbara Streisand) to her list.

I just saw Blood, Sweat And Tears live yesterday. I didn't know what to expect, since I didn't even recall any of their songs. I knew just one of the songs they played, Spinning Wheel (might not be the actual title of the song, but anyway). The band was really good, a tight drummer, a funky bassist, cool horn section, teh geetarrrr-man and the vocalist was in good shape too.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Did you recognize the lead singer as being David Clayton Thomas?
(or former Three Dog Night vocalist Chuck Negron)

Word has it that there are possibly 2 versions of the band out there.

Howdy. wink

I'm almost positive that if you heard a bit of both songs you'd recognize them.

If I recall correctly, the vocalist was indeed David Clayton Thomas.

While we're talking about Blood, Sweat and Tears, here's another great song that was sung by them. I love this song!!

You've Made Me So Very Happy
Berry Gordy Jr., Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, F. Wilson

I've lost at love before
got mad and closed the door
but you said try, just once more

I chose you for the one
now I'm havin' so much fun
you treated me so kind
I'm about to lose my mind

You made me so very happy
I'm so glad you
came into my life

The others were untrue
but when it came to lovin' you
I'd spend my whole life with you
'cause you came and you took control
you touched my very soul
you always showed me that
lovin' you is where it's at
You made me so very happy
I'm so glad you
came into my life

I love you so much it seems
You're even in my dreams
I can hear you
yeah I can hear you calling me
I'm so in love with you
all I ever want to do is
thank you baby
thank you baby

You made me so very happy
you made me so very happy baby
I'm so glad you came
into my life

Ev'ry day of my life
I wanna thank you
You made me so very happy
Oh, I wanna spend my life with you
thank you baby
thank you baby
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
