In no particular order, and excluding artists who are clearly classical, jazz or jazz-rock/ jazz-funk (otherwise I'd be here forever ) -
1. 'Green Onions' - Booker T and MGs - It might be obvious, but it's obvious cos it's one of the coolest R n' B instrumentals ever commited to shellack. 2. 'Let's Go Away For Awhile' - Beach Boys (tho actually Brain Wilson alone, as it's instrumental and he composed/ arrange/ produced it for his exquisite 'Pet Sounds' album). Glad to see some tasteful orgers have already mentioned this masterpiece. 3. 'Pali Gap' - Jimi Hendrix - Jimi sorta goes Santana - Verging on Jazz-rock, but 'tis heavenly. 4. 'Filthy Habits' - Frank Zappa, from the albums 'Lather', and also on 'Sleep Dirt' IRRC - Awesomely dark, spicy, Balkan-flavoured instrumental rock, with the best howling controlled feedback this side of Jimi. 5. 'Rushes', by the Fireman - the complete album. Actually, a gorgeous, melodic ambient electronica album by Paul McCartney and Youth. Some spoken word here and there, but almost all instrumental. Dreamy, watery, blissed out, psychedelic soundscapes. Oh, and honorary mentions to the David Bowie/ Brian Eno instrumentals/ semi-instrumentals, especially on 'Low' and 'Heroes'. 'Warzawa', 'Weeping Wall' and 'Subterraneans', in all their beautifully austere, forbidding glory. And the delicate 'Moss Garden' from 'Heroes'. | |
