NEW YORK (AP) - Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma was arrested Saturday on charges of attempted murder in a shooting outside a trendy Manhattan nightspot, police said. The 26-year-old rapper, whose real name is Remy Smith, had been sought for questioning in the shooting of a 23-year-old woman early Saturday after a verbal dispute near a bar in the Meatpacking District. She reported to police Saturday evening and was also arrested on charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

The rapper's manager said Saturday that she could not talk and referred calls to Remy Ma's attorney, who was with the rapper as she reported to police.

A 911 call reporting gunfire led police to a woman with a gunshot wound. Three blocks away, officers discovered a luxury SUV owned by Remy Ma; the vehicle had been involved in a single-car crash and abandoned, police said.

The victim, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, was in stable condition at a hospital.

Sasha Tcherekoff, owner of the Pizza Bar, said a review of security videotape taken inside his nightspot showed the rapper and her friends having a good time before they exited.

"The police have indicated to us that the altercation happened a block away," the owner said. "The security tapes determined there was no physical or verbal altercation while they were in the Pizza Bar."

Remy Ma was nominated for a Grammy as part of the Terror Squad for the 2004 summer smash "Lean Back." She also earned the "Best Female Hip Hop" award at the 2005 BET Awards.

She went on to a solo career, releasing last year's "There's Something About Remy." She has appeared on recordings with best-selling performers including Fat Joe, Eminem and R. Kelly, according to a biography on her Web site.

Amidst intense media speculation, rapper Remy Ma has voluntarily turned herself in to authorities in connection with Saturday morning's (July 14) shooting in New York City's meatpacking district.

As SOHH previously reported, a 27-year-old woman believed to be Remy Ma (real name Remy Smith ) is accused of firing two bullets into the torso of 23-year-old Makeda Barnes-Joseph after the two left Manhattan's Pizza Bar on 9th Avenue.

Police say both women were part of a three car caravan that left the Meatpacking District nightspot shortly before 4 a.m. Previous reports said that the two had argued earlier in the evening at the bar and continued to exchange words after leaving, but the argument turned violent about a block away when a gun was fired.

Sasha Tcherekoff, owner of Pizza Bar, says the altercation did not take place at his establishment. "The police have indicated to us that the altercation happened a block away," Tcherekoff told the Associated Press . "The security tapes determined that there was no physical altercation while they were in the Pizza Bar."

Remy turned herself in Saturday evening (July 14) and was charged with attemped murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. The rapper was accompanied by her attorney Scott Leemon who said an arraignment would possibly be held today (July 15th).

"I ask everyone to keep an open mind," Leemon said. "Things are not always as they seem."

[Update: According to local news station NY1, Remy Ma was arraigned on attempted murder, assault and weapons charges earlier today (July 15) and is currently being held at Riker's Island on $250,000 bail.]

Remy Ma was released from Rikers Island on a $250,000 bond yesterday (July 15) after turning herself into authorities on Saturday evening (July 14) in connection with the shooting of a woman in New York City's meatpacking district.

As SOHH previously reported, authorities believe Remy (real name Remy Smith) fired two bullets into the torso of 23-year-old Makeda Barnes-Joseph after the two left Manhattan's Pizza Bar early Saturday morning (July 14).

Barnes-Joseph, who claims to be one of Remy Ma's closest friends, told New York's Daily News that the rapper accused her of stealing about $3,000 from her purse before allegedly shooting her.

Barnes-Joseph reportedly held Remy's purse briefly while they partied at the Pizza Bar.

"All I heard was the gun go off," she said from her bed at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. "I couldn't believe she shot me!"

"What hurts me is that when she shot me she went over and dumped the bag," Barnes-Joseph continued. " She didn't even say, 'Oh, my God, I just shot her.'" Remy, who was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault and weapons possession, plead not guilty to the charges at her arraignment yesterday.

Remy's manager, Big Joe of New Era Management, speculates that Barnes-Joseph was after a quick payday

"I don't see [Remy] as the kind of person who would shoot someone. Remy doesn't carry a gun," he said. " We have a criminal investigation that will soon turn into a lawsuit for millions of dollars."
