Most Underrated Disco Album of the Day: 'Mandolay' by La Flavour (1979)
Can't see why this album doesn't get much love from the disco crowd.I've never even Finess mention it,lol. There are some explosive grooves here! You already know the hit title track (a relentless Latin-flavored groove) but there's alot more.Tracks like "Can't Kill The Beat","Can You Dance" and "When The Whistle Blows" are as catchy and vibrant as the major disco hits from the same period. There's even a nice R&B slow jam here,"Only The Lonely (Have A Reason To Be Sad)",although it sounds slightly out of place on an otherwise deliriously uptempo album.

I've always looked at the song OFF The Wall, as an anthem, that should be played at the beginning and end of a party. It sums up what being young and carefree is all about.

Mara

Sparks / No. 1 In Heaven (1979)

Great, great album. Classic Moroder late-'70s Computer Disco. There are magical moments throughout this entire set. However, I prefer the 12-inch of "Beat The Clock" over the version on the LP. "Tryouts For The Human Race" and the title track are two of the best disco songs of the '70s. A redefining moment for dance music. You can hear influences of this album in so many club/dance/synth/house/techno records post-1980.

Chic / Risqué (1979)

Has the warhorse "Good Times" on it, and, of course, it deserves all the accolades, but this LP also has some gems like "My Forbidden Lover," "Soup For One" (which was interpolated in Modjo's 2000 hit "Lady") and some great ballads such as "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)." This was very elegantly made 'Disco' for the time that really pushed at the genre's purported 'limitations.' Rodgers is underrated, imho, when it comes to the productions he was cooking up during this entire period (from here well into the early- and mid-'80s).

I'd also recommend you check out A Taste Of Honey's second album 'Another Taste'.Released in the summer of '79,this is a very good album. The first single "Do It Good" is waaaayyyy funkier than "Boogie Oogie Oogie".It puts that earlier hit to shame. The girls also hit pay dirt with the dreamy,string-laden disco jam "Dance".

Hugely underrated band. Very very talented. And I agree with your choices.

I don't think Another Taste is available on CD. Which sucks.

Can't forget this album.Released in the late spring of 1976,Tavares 'Sky High' album is a disco classic.Produced by Freddie Perren, the album boasts the massive hit single "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel",a sparkling gem that was popular everywhere throughout that summer. The follow-up single "Don't Take Away The Music" is also a disco favorite.Other noteworthy tracks include the opening song "The Mighty Power Of Love",another disco number that shines....the smooth,easy-going "Ridin' High"....and a delightfully soulful remake of the R&B standard "To The Other Man".This isn't strictly a disco album, there's plenty of R&B here too,but the dance tracks make this a worthwhile album for the disco crowd.

yeah, that pisses me off mad What's really frustrating is that, the first album and the third album 'Twice As Sweet' are available as a 2-CD set:

disbelief They just totally ignored the second album, which is superior imo

Most Surprising Disco Album: Peter Brown 'Fantasy Love Affair' (1978)

I bought this CD several years ago and I was completely surprised.I was already familar with the two big hits "Dance With Me" and the funky R&B jam "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me",so I was expecting this album to be a relentless disco party from beginning to end.But you know what? This album is surprisingly mellow. One critic even wrote that it's more like a Steely Dan album! I like it though....the songs are smooth and mesmerizing.Best moments include the dreamy "For Your Love" and the equally impressive title track.I also like "The Singer Becomes The Dancer".Rest assured, there are some hot grooves here too.In addition to the first two singles (which became dancefloor favorites),the album also includes the catchy "You Should Do It"....which is very similar to "Dance With Me".It's a superb album...not quite what I was expecting, but it blew me away nonetheless.A pleasant surprise! I highly recommend it.

The baddest disco album of all time would definately have to be "Bad Girls" by Donna Summer.

Alot of neglected gems on this album.Paul Jabara's "Trapped In A Stairway" is late-70s pop/disco at it's best....D.C. LaRue's mesmerizing "Do You Want The Real Thing" just sizzles....the instrumental track "Leatherman's Theme" is another highlight.

Cool soundtrack that got lost in the shuffle....perhaps overshadowed by the superior 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack?
