Lionel Richie/Diana Ross vs. Luther Vandross/Mariah Carey I was watching a performance of "Endless Love" on youtube (yes I really do like cheesy love songs lol) and I was suprised to see that some people seemed to prefer the version that Luther and Mariah did. I really don't see the hype over their version to be honest. For me, the original is the best. I just think the song suits Diana's voice better than it does Mariah's, but which version does everyone prefer?

There's no comparison.The Lionel/Diana original is superior  I actually hate whenever Mariah does a remake....she's not very good at remaking songs.Luther is a master at remakes,but even he should have left "Endless Love" alone.You can't top Diana and Lionel! | |

It all depends if you were too young for original. If you never heard the original and your first introduction was the Luther/Mariah version, then to your ears thats the original.
hey maybe its because the combonation of Luther & Mariah could sing Lionel & Diana under a table. and Mariah is not good at remakes, maybe thats because she only sings songs she wrote and not good at or use to singing something she didnt write...although AM listeners would disagree "Without You" | |

The song suits the voices of Lionel and Diana much better. It's a delicate song and they seem to lovingly caress the lines. Luther gives it a good shot (especially when you consider the rest of that album), but the main problem I have is Mariah. Throughout the performance, she's either yelling or using that damned whisper voice. The original is like a massage, but the cover ends up closer to a beatdown. Lionel Richie and Diana Ross's version of the song is better to me. It's more authentic and extremely heart piercing. There version brings tears to my eyes. Although, Vandross/Carey was a nice effort. I'll either turn the station or wait impatiently for the song to end as oppose to being wowed by
Richie and Ross. They simply sound better and had better chemistry where the song was concerned. ENDLESS LOVE is one of the best love songs of the 80s. Now, if some folks on here don't know or understand, you're missing out. Really!  | |

I'll give it to Luther & Mariah, since they're superior vocalists, and Diana was better with the Supremes. | |

Her problem is...when she does a remake,she never brings the same emotion that you hear on the original.I remember in the late 90s when she did that bland remake of Brenda K.Starr's "I Still Believe".She just goes through the motions,unable to recreate the drama and urgency of the original. | |
