Which genre do you hate with a passion?

There's a type of music I can't stand. As yet, it doesn't have a name, so let's just call it Shitty Stadium Vibes.

"Sit Down" - James
"Laid" - James
"A Ship Called Dignity" - Deacon Blue
""Real Gone Kid" - Deacon Blue
"Don't Go" - Hothouse Flowers
"Whole of The Moon" - The Waterboys
Anything by the New Radicals

"Smooth jazz" or "soft rock" gets my vote.

I'm also not a big fan of improvisational/free-form jazz. I can appreciate the skill and talent that goes into it, but screeching horns can really set my nerves on fire after a minute or so.

watered down mainstream radiopop/RnB light.
Average stuff you'll hear on the radio that's there
just to be commercial and appeal the generate mass
but is totally soulless and dead.

i used to feel the same way, mainly because i was raised by a hippie mom who hated country music with a PASSION; but, aw man, you haven't lived until you've really appreciated johnny cash's music. i don't really consider him "country" per se, but getting into his music and reading his autobiography really expanded my mind...in a really really really valuable way. nod

yeah, i feel the same way...i think he obviously had a fondness for people in the "country music community" or whatever, but i always got the idea he was more in tune with rockabilly/early rock music, and he said in his autobio that he considered himself a maker of "mountain music" moreso than a country musician.

Aaaah, that'd be that Snooze jazz bobba...

hmmm I bet you'd break the no improvisational/free-form jazz rule if the Thurston Moore/Cecil Taylor tape surfaced...

FJ: At this point, are you comfortable as an improviser?

THURSTON MOORE: ...I have played a couple of gigs with Cecil Taylor and Milford Graves and Peter Brötzmann. A lot of it was years back, a few years back and I feel like I have to get back in touch with playing with these guys again because now I feel more ready, whereas before, I was more tiptoeing along with these guys. These guys are masters.

Thurston Moore on the Cecil Taylor connection...

97.10.04

Thurston Moore/Cecil Taylor/Others Unknown exactly

October 4, 1997
The Cooler, New York City, New York, USA

Set List:
Improvisation (Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth performed with Cecil Taylor)

Notes from James H's email:
"Here's what Thurston told a friend of mine about that tape-

"its me w/ jackson krall and tom surgal - drums - and dominic duval - bass --- we played one set together one night and some horrible sax player bum rushed the stage and played w/ us stopping cecil from joining in - the next night we played again together w/out the fucked sax player and cecil did indeed join us 20 minutes into the meal. video exists of both nights in total - but they are not "circulated" t"

The tape that circulates is from the first night, without Cecil. The sound quality on that tape isn't so great, either. No known tapes circulate of the 2nd night, with Cecil. "

There's no genre that I really hate with a passion.
Generally there'll be something I can find that's listenable.

hmmm There are a couple of exceptions...Gangsta Rap & Death Metal. disbelief

i'm with you on gangsta rap, though i typically call it "blingsta rap" these days.

death metal can make me giggle sometimes. i'm not a fan, but i love anything ridiculous and over the top. i have one death metal album by a band called VONDUR, who did a concept album about their love of the death star. one of the band members is a dwarf and they wear greasepaint to make them look like angry kitties. i love them. lol
