"99 & 1/2" Mavis Staples
http://www.youtube.com/wa...Ia8pq8Pr6c This is a very cool song. Does any boday have any information on it? The voice, the message. You can hear Rosie Gaines was very much an admirer! small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

It's a 50s era gospel song by Dorothy Love Coates that has been improvised upon by Mavis and Ry Cooder.
This is from the Mavis Staples album... ...We'll Never Turn Back (2007) It's dedicated to the Civil Rights struggle of the 60s. I’m running, running for freedom y'all 99 and a half, just won’t do This song shouldn't be confused with the Wilson Pickett classic even though they both use the same hook line...99 and a half, just won't do. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Rightly said: how are the other tracks?
Does ry cooder appear throughout the whole album? Is it worth buying? I can only tell you that it appeals to me. Stays on point regarding the subject matter and I never had the urge to skip a track. The album maintains an authentic Gospel/Roots feel throughout. Ry Cooder (which contributes to the Roots vibe of the album) functions in a musician/producer role. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Saw her last night at Berns, Stockholm. Relatively small venue which made it all the better. Jam packed with people who appreciate good music. Brilliant atmosphere. Most of the set was from her latest album "We'll never turn back" produced by the one and only Ry Cooder (who also plays on the album). The album is basically reinterpretations of classic freedom songs from the Civil Rights Movement plus a couple of new songs co-written by Mavis and Ry. Ry wasn't there but a fully competent guitarist took his place, can't remember the name, Rick somebody. Of course there were a few of the old classics performed such as the massive "I'll take you there" which brought the house down. Everyone was singing, it was electrofying. PROPER MUSIC. A classic night. www.myspace.com/mavisstaples
