What's your point?

I've always got criticism about being a Prince Fan. I don't care what floats his boat. Nobody knows but him. If you bring the funk I don't care. Being gay had nothing to do with me disliking his music. Saying something bad about luther, is like saying something bad about the Pope or something. I have Gay people in my family and gay co-workers. Gayness doesn't really bother me. As long as somebody is a good person I don't really give a shit. If your gay be gay, don't pretend to be something your not. That goes with everything in life. just be yourself.
But dude, you brought up gayness in the conversation even though it had nothing to do with your topic.

there was nothing funky about Luther and am shocked that vainandy doesn't lash out against him as much as he does Shitney.

he is just as much to blame as she.
Searchin' and Glow of Love are funky as hell.

Luther was involved in some funk in the beginning of his career. The stuff he did with Change ("Searching", "The Glow of Love") are genius. He sung background for Chic for many years too and David Bowie and Roberta Flack (you can hear him singing background on Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack's "Back Together Again"). And "Never Too Much" was his first solo single, I think someone got that song and "The Glow..." confused. I dig his "Bad Boy/Having a Party" joint too. Sometime after 1986 Luther started to get more of a pop image because up until then he was strictly an urban artist who generated to the ladies mostly. I have no qualms about him being gay. The black community would've turned on him if he had come out. In the end of his life, when asked about being gay, he was like "you can believe whatever you wanna believe" and flipped the bird basically.

Listen to "She's A Super Lady" from his first album. That jam is pure funk. Also, check out his work with the group Change, The BB&Q Band, and his production work on Aretha Franklin's "Get It Right".

Luther had a funky side. The late 80s is when he became boring as hell. Of course, in the late 80s, it seems like everyone was losing all sense of funk.

but he carried the torch and is most famous for his crappy sappy love songs...

sorry, he is just to blame for the crap our music is in as whitney...

Have U heard these? I just read your entire post, and besides stating that U didn't have a problem with him being Gay, then about 80% of the post was about that, I saw that U didn't like his voice. Now, like Vain Andy said, his music production in the late '80s was kind of cheesy, and I didn't like it, but the stuff I listed above is slammin'. I guess if U don't like his voice, then that's your taste. But how can U not love "Glow of Love"?

hmmm Intereting statement. LV was far from being a Pop artist despite the fact that he had a few crossover hits and once was a backup for Bowie during the Young Americans Tour . More or less, He was strictly a legendary soul ballader .

oh, I see your point.

I didn't mean he was pop like Bjork. I never considered Bjork really pop. She's an edge artist that gained pop masses from time to time, but has always done her own thing.

That's what I mean by Luther being the Bjork of American Pop. My jokes suck ass when I don't have photoshop. sigh

He did "Glow Of Love" with the group, Change. He also did a euro-disco song during the disco era with a group. I think it was called Hot Butterfly. Yeah, Luther was far from just adult contemporary. If he did just adult contemporary, I would be shitting on him these days instead of Shitney because he would have been before her. Same thing with Lionel Richie. Lionel had made funk earlier. Shitney came out the gate being boring as hell. lol

In the end of his life, when asked about being gay, he was like "you can believe whatever you wanna believe" and flipped the bird basically.

I saw that interview on BET also. When he said that with his bitchy "fuck you" attitude, I popped my fingers and actually applauded.

I hated the music he was doing pre-Shitney such as "Superstar". However, funk acts still lived on and continued throwing down hard. When that little miss goodie two shoes brought her ass on the scene, then folks like Freddie Jackson, Anita Baker, Mikki Howard started coming out of the woodwork from everywhere and just starting taking over the R&B stations.

Luther had been a success earlier but mainly an R&B success only. Little miss goodie two shoes showed everyone that there was big money to be made making boring music if you could gain a pop audience also. Yeah, Lionel Richie was before her but groups like Midnight Star, The Barkays, Cameo, Zapp, etc. were still the dominating groups on R&B radio. When Shitney hit the scene, all that changed.
