Barry White's Kidney Problem

by Julie Keller
Sep 26, 2002, 11:15 AM PT

Barry White's looking for more than just a little love.
He's in serious need of a new kidney.

Through his label, the 58-year-old makeout-music miester has announced that he has suffered kidney failure and will need a transplant.

"Doctors confirm that Barry White has a history of hypertension (high blood pressure), which has led to a decline of kidney function," says a statement from Island Def Jam Music Group. "He has started a course of maintenance dialysis therapy. Once stabilized, he will be a candidate for a kidney transplant."

At the request of family, the label is keeping mum on the details of White's illness and his treatment location.
Considering the gravity of his condition, it may be some time before the Sultan of Sex will be back on stage warbling hits like "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," "You're the First, the Last, My Everything," "Your Sweatness Is My Weakness," "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me," "I'm Gonna Love You, Just A Little More Baby" and "Love's Theme."

I hope things work out for him. Everyone familiar with Barry White knows the voice and the lyrics, but rarely is his musicianship acknowledged. Mr. White came out in an era when the music was so distinct you could recognize the song (and sometimes the artist) within the first five notes. If I'm not mistaken, he did much of the composing for the Love Unlimited Orchestra.

Sending much love and prayers...

Barry White Needs Kidney Transplant
Fri Sep 27, 4:26 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Deep-voiced soul singer Barry White needs a kidney transplant due to complications from years of chronic high blood pressure, his record label said.

White, 58, is undergoing dialysis treatment to stabilize his condition, Island Def Jam Music Group said in a statement Friday.

The singer's family refused to say whether he is hospitalized or is undergoing treatment at his Los Angeles home.

White is known for such romantic songs as "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" and "You're the First, the Last, My Everything."

He had been working on a new studio album, said Sheila Richman, spokeswoman for Island Def Jam.

White was hospitalized in August 1999 for a blood pressure problem, which forced him to cancel several live performances with the group Earth, Wind & Fire.

Despite reaching his peak of popularity in the 1970s, White won his first two Grammys in 2000 for best male and traditional R&B vocal performance for "Staying Power."

He also has made appearances on the TV shows "Ally McBeal" and "The Simpsons."

I hope he pulls through... no disrespect, but I'm sure he'll get the best kidney money can buy.

Remember, those with the $$$ get bumped up 2 the top of the list...see Larry Hagman, David Crosby etc. Hey, if I had the money, I'd want 2 get mine too.

Still, God bless ya Barry.
