It seemed like a lot of these cats like Tyrone Davis and Carl Carlton had an ill-advised remake or two in their catalogue.

With all due respect to Tyrone Davis, that outfit he had with gold chains made him look like Dolemite's cousin. I think that was Teena Marie's second apperance on Soul Train. She turned it out.

So very true. I'm digging on these classic Soul Train for real. This is my soundtrack. The only thing that's missing is the commerical for Posner Products and Afro-Sheen. lol

In his defense (since he can't speak for himself, RIP), that style was very popular back then. I'm sure if he was reminded of it twenty years after that, he'd probably was like "OH... doh! what was WRONG with me!?!" lol Speaking of Tyrone, I love his song "Apple Pie" (alongside "Baby Can I Change My Mind" and "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time").

Timmy I dig what you're saying but that episode was probably 1980. The R&B singers back then like Teddy, Smokey, Curtis, and Bobby Womack wore clothing that was more in sync for that time (but surely dated by now).

But Tyrone's outfit looked like something that was in style 6 years before that. Like something straight out of a 71-72 blaxpoitation flick. It kind of reminded me of the episode when the late great Joe Simon came on and tried to look hip for the kids (huge permed afro wig, cape, huge flared pants and shirt)..I kind of felt embarrased for him (lol).

I must admit her performance didn't annoy me as I anticipated it would.
She must have been much more restrained vocally in the early days.

actually I wasn't going to watch sould train.. but my mom called me into the room to show me.. what the people were wearing and how they were dancing... I can't believe guys would wear bright yellow banana pants and red shirt with a yellow tie.... I just can't believe some of the stuff they wore.... and how tight their pants were lol lol

and Teena marie wasn't even singing... she didn't even have the mike up to her mouth... when she was supposed to be singing.... Teena was more worried about trying to dance...

from the song list it looks like the show was from 1980. Soul Train was cool in the day but it irked me they never played much P. Funk or Prince music.

Yeah I just google his name and yes he's going by as "Bishop Joe Simon". Alive and kicking at 63/64.
