Van Hunt fans and Blasphemous Thoughts LOL

Okay....

How many albums will it take for us to start questioning whether this man can be "Skipper the II"?hmmm

(not that I feel he is, and there will only be one [insert random superstar]...but..)

when I look at the sonic differences between Van Hunt and On the Jungle Floor.....similarities arise when compared to the sound of For You and it's follow-up Prince

-more rock
-more consistant pop melodies vs. laid back if slightly danceable R&B
-more of a restless sound

NOT TO MENTION the previews of Popular Machine sound a little dirty minded to me.....whip

I think by now we can agree the man is funky...and he's starting 2 let his freak flag fly...

{Main Question=>>>} For those fans who have both of his CD's and can see the similarities in Prince's early growth and Van's: how many more albums b4 we start to see a purple light around his head?

(I heard some orger say awhile back that they anticipated Jungle Floor like they would a new Prince CD....I can now say the same about Popular Machine...and I have a feeling I'm not alone....) excited

How many more Albums? When he starts to make a name for himself and get recongnized. Hell, I've never seen any of his video's during the day on BET.

Plus Van is 30 or going on 30. If he would have started out as an artist 10 years back when he was 20 when (Neo-Soul was in full swing), instead of being a producer behind the scenes, you never know where Van could be.

D'Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu were all big in 1996/7, Van could have been right there with them. He produced the hit track, Dionne Farris "Hopeless."

Van has the skill set 2 be around 4 a while. I just hope he does NOT give up based on sales and radio play (non-play).

I bought that up because if Van would have kept that track for himself around 1996/1997, he could have been competing with the D'Angelo's, the Erykah's the Maxwell's in the Neo-Soul thing. Van would have become a big star just like them in 1997.

I had already guess a while back that Van was do his own "Dirty Mind" sort of album. He even told me himself that an album of that calibre would be very rewarding.

And I said to him that if he did create something as amazing as P's masterpiece, then I would thereby proclaim him the lord and savior of 21st century R&B music. giggle

Yes, it's from Love Jones. Before that, she released an album after leaving Arrested Development: Wild Seed - Wild Flower.

Yeah.

"Van Hunt" and "For You"- 2 laid back soulful and funky albums done by one men armies.

"On The Jungle Floor" and "Prince" - an expansion of the 1st album, but with more styles (Rock, New Wave, etc.) and better songwriting.

"Dirty Mind" and "Popular Machine" - Well, we all know what Prince did here, but will Van do something just as radical?

I really liked the song. But I wonder whether he may have been lost in the shuffle ten years ago, just as he is today.

The comparison to Prince's early career is plausible. But Prince didn't have to deal with hip-hop, whose presence has (IMHO) stifled the support and demand for Van's music.

He wouldn't be lost in the shuffle, he would fit right in.

As I stated earlier, you hand Max, D'Angelo and Badu. You also had Tony Toni Tone, Mint Condition, Lauryn Hill's solo came out around that time, so he would have been perfect.

neutral as much as i hate to agree with that i do....BUT smile..Van did come up in a time where he could expect 2 have 2 compete with hip-hop....Rap must have been a big surprise to Prince...like: "I play instruments damn it! Multiple instruments! Why are you givin him my attention!" - the times they are a changing tho...I presume more "Vans" will be coming out of the woodwork...

Van Hunt is just Van Hunt.
Van Hunt's first release is far superior to For You for one thing.

On the Jungle Floor and Prince? All I know is I never skip any tracks on On the Jungle Floor.

It's actually a good thing that he is older then we won't get his equivalent of New power soul, ATWIAD and Chaos and disorder. He will finish with a bang on his Purple Rain.

Good points. As a longtime hip-hop fan, I approach it like Jimmy Breslin does NYC. I love and hate it, equally.

Right on about hip-hop catching Prince by surprise. By the time he'd hit the "top," he'd only been there for a minute before hip-hop started to change the industry. He railed against it, then tried to co-opt it, then learned how to co-exist with it.

Van, on the other hand, had to deal with it from day one. He's not a new-jack or gangsta crooner. He's on the other side of that.

I do share your hope that musicians will come back and have a larger presence on black radio and charts.
