I really loved his first album and Try!
But I must admit...I'm guilty of letting my distaste for his personality affect how I feel about his music I know it's bad, but I can't help it! I do think he is quite talented though If you will, so will I

Thank God for the 2 Johns (Mayer and Frusciante) who are really in a position of "power" to influence music and audiences by completly pushing the envelope.
Frusciante started off the Peppers set with an awesome jam solo, and Mayer ripped Gravity and was even smart enough to cut one of the verses and then just launched into a massive solo. In today's age where simple seems to win out, its refreshing to see these 2 mix it up. His rhythm playing is superb, as noticed in Vultures with his muted chicken picken triples. I am seeing him in 2 wks with Ben Folds Nassau Col NY, I can't wait. This guy is that good on guitar! I would never make comparisons, but musicians would be lying to say this guy is overrated in any way. [Edited 7/12/07 10:52am] Music is the best...

I heard Wynton Marsalis a few months back, and felt the same way....I wanted to scream out "blow me outta here, man...let it go...." I think he'd probably agree with that. There's a Rolling Stone interview a few years go where he basically said his brothers have a hard time listening to his earlier albums because they knew what he was capable of and it wasn't showing in the acoustic pop that dominated those works. Personally, I think his latest, Continuum, does the best at showing the broad spectrum of his talent. . [Edited 7/12/07 11:23am] "What kind of fuck ending is that?"

LIVE, he is awesome: his true talent shines and he can tear it up.....most of his recordings I find too contrived, maybe because I know what he is capable of. does he have a live album? yes, as mentioned in other replies...he also (thank you john ) allows taping and trading of his shows...might wanna look around the net. I got about 20 live shows on cd, some real gems in there...and it's free! (and legal!) . [Edited 7/12/07 15:31pm] It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Ok let me start... White John Mayer is 100 times better than Black Prince ----- Only in your world my friend. John is great but, he has got to pump up his live show a little bit more to be at P 's level.

I've never heard one single John Mayer song. I have no idea what his music sounds like at all. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I just saw John Mayer last night in Hartford, that show was awesome!!! It was his home coming concert as well. So there there was extra buzz. He did amazing job. My only downside was annoying 18 years old who seem to confuze a concert hall with a bar.

He's GREAT. A very talented guy. I'm not a HUGE fan of his voice, but I can tolerate it. Sometimes he comes off like a mopey lovelorn frat boy, but he'll probably grow out of it.

I don't really like his voice, but his playing and songwriting is quite good!
