John Mayer Wins

I had a choice of watching Interpol on Letterman, Silverchair on Leno or John Mayer on PBS.
After 10 seconds each of Interpol and Silverchair, John Mayer won.

It was a 2005 Soundstage performance done in Chicago.
He did some tunes with his band, a couple of acoustic solo numbers and capped it off by bringing on Chicago's own Buddy Guy.

The boy was good.

Now with that said, in the words of General Maximus...

...At my signal, unleash hell.

I like John Mayer, but not his recorded stuff particularly....

LIVE, he is awesome: his true talent shines and he can tear it up.....most of his recordings I find too contrived, maybe because I know what he is capable of.

hmmm does he have a live album?

cool

I heard Wynton Marsalis a few months back, and felt the same way....I wanted to scream out "blow me outta here, man...let it go...."

Maybe it's more that he knows how to stay in character based on what he's doing. wink

Btw, i'll avoid the obvious opening for innuendo in your Wynton comment. whistling

My point exactly.....remember the hackneyed corporate phrase "out of the box thinking"? I guess I prefer him "out of the box".....

And regarding the second comment.....you are just too, too kind to me. tease

I loved his first album, "Room For Squares" and I really love the "Try" trio album, with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan...

I dig his guitar playing more than his singing, a little of which goes an extremely long way, IMO....

In the words of Zappa, "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar", lol ....

Go and check him out live! He's touring now. Calhoun, you should have made the trek to San Jose last month, it was worth it. He was really working the guitar that night, plus he was fresh off of getting rid of blondie.

Believe me, I wanna see him nod But I can't stand the drive to San Jose, I think I've been spoiled lately b/c so many good shows I've seen have been right over the bridge & I live so close to it. He needs to bring his ass to SF biggrin

The last time he played in SF was about two years ago for a bunch of shows the week of NYE as the John Mayer Trio. I wanted to go then because he played smaller venues, but it was a show combined with a Grateful Dead member so I had this vision of being surrounded by post-hippies in a greater than usual amount of cloud of smoke. eek

smile Nice. But consider this.
It's probably the success of his singing that's allowing him to play his guitar and get paid well for it.

Very True, and I'm glad it got him here...I just want him to ease up on that part a bit now, lol

but I definitely think he's making some nice moves, and his stints with Herbie Hancock (the album, and playing with the Headhunters at Boneroo-- This was before Lionel Loueke , of course) probably helped steer him towards a more mature audience...but he's got time....

It is sooooo not necessary for every thread to be disdained filled or comparisons to another white artist, or Prince, or anybody who was famous before the contemporaries were even conceived. Geez, let's find peace in this sanctuary for once. Woah I need to be fed promptly.
