What's So Bad About Dated Production?

I see this complaint on the org and elsewhere. What's so bad about songs sounding dated? Doesn't that inspire some feelings of nostalgia? I've never understood the need for everything to be modern. I get that some songs sound timeless, but there are plenty of good ones that definitely sound like products of their particular era.

Thoughts?

I totally agree, everytime i hear some EXEC say something sounds "dated" i want to just throw the exec out the window. I remember seeing a review a few years back on a Bon Jovi record, and the reviewer used that word "dated" every other line, why shouldnt someone who grew in a certain period still have that "feel" or "sound" if they choose too. I love how i can listen to something and know what era it came from, I mean the 50's had a sound, the 60's def did, the 70's did, and of course the 80's did, but since that NOTHING! This is a great topic and is the reason why the industry caters to new artists without playing the older artists who still record music, but because they are older they dont get play, thats why we are where we are with music promotion.

i think SOONER and LATER, "dated" production pays off.

what i mean is, the "trendy" sound may be popular when the album is initially released, and then years later it may resurface as "classic" or "retro" and regain some of its original glory...ya just have to weather that "in between" time when it's considered neither "current" or "nostalgic" and it just sounds out of style. everything comes back around again eventually.

rolleyes this topic is so overly discussed and out dated.

giggle

as far as it being a complaint:
well, my take on it is that its sort of reflects society...and what's being taught. if it's old then it's no good. on to the next thing. the newest is the best etc...

in ten years a lot of what's being played today will sound dated. i don't understand why that's a negative either. it's sort of common sense. then again common sense is not that common. lol maybe people are trying to separate what the y listened to as a child to what they listen to as an adult.
especially when it comes to albums released in the early 80's or prior and people saying that's so dated. no shit! LOL technology, and sounds change with time. simple as that. maybe mid 90's to current..songs are a little harder to pin point a release time / era.

to me what's more annoying is when a song's been out for a couple months and people are already calling it old. LOL
twocents

but i laugh when i've not heard a song in a long time and all of a sudden that Casio keyboard kicks in...talk about dated... falloff but it's just as enjoyable none the less. and nostaligic at times as well.
