NE never made it past being 2-hit wonders everywhere outside the US, so they mean nothing to me. They mean the same to me that Take That do in America.

the org makes me sick....lol

my comment WASSSSS....to Ellie....

but I don't think I need to really even address anyone who thinks NE was some second rate group...especially compared to NKOTB...disbelief

NKOTB was created as an ADMITTED knock off of NE to appeal to white folks....as stated by the creator of both groups Maurice Starr.

Nkotb...completely less talented than NE. Jordan had some vocal talents.

OT I guess, but I remember really liking Jordan Knight's 'give it to you'. Thinking back on that, I bet that song gave J Timberlake a few ideas on life 'apres boy band' - for better or worse wink

Haha, yeah I know all that, but New Edition as a popular group mean nothing to me. They had a blip of popularity in the UK when I was about 2 years old and in Europe they're only known for spawning Bobby Brown. Even Johnny Gill never had a hit here - and I bought all his albums in the last few years, so it's purely something I've learned about through the internet. NKOTB on the other hand may have been a white NE knock-off, but I have an actual point of reference with them in my life. Get it?

Seriously, if you ever get the chance to listen to Jordan Knight's first solo album, (Give It To you has dated a lot now), you'll hear that the album is like a better versin of Timberlake's Justified. The Jam & Lewis tracks are stellar, and there's a nice ballad called 'Change Your Ways' that JT & Usher would kill for.

There is a difference in saying that I was only 2 when NE came out so I got attached than saying they are somehow a lesser group, which I'm hearing you saying.

That's like me saying the Temptations don't mean anything because i wasn't born so therefore the jacksons are better.

My kid loveddddd b2k (and I apologize for that lol) BUT actually loves her some NE.

I'm talking side by side....NE is the more talented group regardless if they were less popular than NKOTB in Europe. You guys like crappy stuff though....lol

It's kiddie nostalgia though, isn't it? I don't even think I said that NE were less talented. In fact I remember seeing New Edition on MTV during their 90s comeback, and I sat there thinking "Huh? They only had a couple of hits and gave us Bobby Brown. Why the hell are they coming back?" biggrin

It's not even a case of comparing The Temptations to The Jacksons, because The Temptations were actually big everywhere and have their songs firmly solidified in Western Pop Culture. NE as far as Europe is concerned is "that group of J5 wannabes that did Candy Girl". It's AS IF The Jackson 5 had disappeared after ABC and then come back with Victory 14 years later.

I can imagine American viewers being perplexed at watching that Diana tribute concert a couple of weeks ago and seeing the whole audience swaying and singing along to Take That like they were some kind of icons with classic songs you've never even heard. Well, they are over here.

Or maybe a lot of Americans wonder why the hell Kylie Minogue is considered a proper rival to Madonna in some places when to you she was that cute chick who did The Locomotion and then suddenly came back 13 years later with another hit and then disappeared again.

I think that's a better analogy.

They had a song called "This One's For The Children". My baby sister loved that song. Jordan Knight's vocals were woeful on that one.

I loved that song. Too bad it doesn't get played until Christmas time (because it was on their Christmas cd).

still...NE...is still cool...the other guys....no cool points. I mean we could've admitted to "cooler" guilty pleasures than some damn NKOTB, guys!

...Even if Bobby is the butt of all NE jokes, he's still cooler than some damn Jordan Knight.

When I was 12, I was in love with Al B Sure during that era and gave a damn about some New Kids. I really was NEVER into them. But being a White female growing up in the Midwest that was into Hip Hop and Prince was enough guilty pleasure.

I gurantee you will never find a White chick from Omaha, NE that knows a random Big L verse or know the hook of every Sauce Money record. I'm just saying...maybe I was never built for some damn Pop Boy Band bullshit...

But there was that Color Me Badd album I had in 91.....that was only cause of New Jack City.....really.....

I know what you mean. it's definitely uncool to say you like NKOTB however if you say you like NE it's all good. hmmm..why is that?

To this day it is so uncool to say you like NKOTB and I was one of the biggest fans around. Like I said earlier I bring them out when I want to relive childhood or if I'm drunk and want to dance around my house. As soon as I'm done its back in the tupperware in the garage like it never happened.

I'm embarrassed to admit I listen but why? Where they really that embarrassing? I was a groupie and full flegged fan so I don't know what it was like on the other side but I've been trained to be embarrassed as the years have gone by.

BTW - Jordan is a HUGE Prince fan. Always has been. I meet him a few times and we had the coolest conversations about Prince. He knows his P stuff for sure! We gotta give him props on that. Also, he remade Never Take The Place Of Your Man and it was good. So maybe we shouldn't hate on Jordan too much.

Jordan was pretty funny on the Surreal Life. Like when he was trying to hit on Ryan Starr and she shot him down by telling him he was too old. And when the group was in the studio recording a song. Jordan was trying his best to hit a falsetto note so high, El Debarge couldn't sing it. He was so off key it wasn't funny. Finally Flavor Flav had to come out and tell him that he made an @$$ out of himself while the rest of the cast were almost on the floor laughing.

Here is why they are cooler...they continue to make hits. They are still relevant, and their audience somehow grew up with them. While a pop, fly by night act's audience did not. They somehow got a hold on that long term factor. THey still tour, and still sell mad crazy tickets. so that is why it is much cooler.

Hit Me Off was one of my favorites...that came out in 96. After they had removed their pimp Maurice from their camp.

I mean...NKOTB? It's just a hip factor for me...just is...

and color me badd was on one of the illest movie soundtracks...New Jack City..

Wait!!! that's what it is!!! Street Cred....That's the bottom line

disbelief I'm sorry, but I just can't listen to them now. 17 years ago I thought this was considered great music. But I was only 6. lol

New Edition might've had some dated songs, but let's face it, they were cooler and funkier. Maurice Starr pimped them and then created a white version of them. And they sold more records in the process.

their last cd "face the music" is still in heavy rotation in my car. to me, it's on par with the last good NE cd, NE Heartbreak. while nobody in NK could touch Johnny Gill vocally, i would give NK vocally the edge over the rest of NE. once you get past Gill and Tresvant (on a good day)...the rest of NE can't sing a lick.

I cannot agree completely with this. Ricky can sing. Ron(Blake C) and Mike are more rappers than anything singers. BBD's last cd in 02 was more Ricky singing and Mike and Ron rapping.

Not according to Pete Waterman who claimed that Rick Astley was the biggest artist of 1987. He seemed to have forgotten about the existence of Prince, MJ, Madonna and Springsteen - a rare year where they were all releasing albums/singles. But no no, RICK ASTLEY was the #1 artist in the world then falloff
