I firmly believe that there's good music to be found in every genre. Sure, you might have to try a little harder with some genres than others to find it, but it's there. I don't understand the mentality that can completely write off an entire kind of music. It's very narrow-minded IMO, and the listener in question risks denying themselves a hell of a lot of good tunes if they do.

nod Co-sign! I mean, what are the odds that you hate every single song in a particular genre?

Exactly.

I find that, more often than not, a person who says they hate say, country music for example, has only ever heard the tripe offered up on Top 40 radio or CMT ill

Same goes for rap, or emo, or pop, or anything.

That said, I can see how after being exposed to the lowest dregs of the style a person might not be motivated to try looking for the good performers, but that doesn't mean they aren't out there. For every Fiddy, there is a Common, and so on.

It doesn't get any more cheesy and homogenized than that IMO. barf disbelief

Yeah, I guess musicals can be broken down into sub -genres (I HATE sub-genres), but I'm more likely to enjoy older rock musicals. I guess "Rent" is supposed to be my generation's "Jesus Christ Superstar". lol

Actually, grunge is some of my favorite music - Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains(even though some rock experts say AIC is more metal than grunge).

I don't remember seeing that among my parents' records. lol

A lot of the calypso they played (and still play to this day) are homemade mixtapes and CDs.

I think once you like at least 1 artist of a particular genre, you're already open to hear and possibly like other artists in that genre.

I don't know much about reggaeton, but I love Nelly Furtado's "No Hay Igual." I don't know if that's just Timbaland's take on reggaeton, but it's hot!

I don't think I hate any genre with a passion, per se, but there are a few I really don't like much, to say the least.

Modern country: Old-school country from 40/50 years ago is pretty nice stuff, but this new shit is annoying. As cliche as today's commercial rap, and even speaking as a half-Southerner myself, those uber-twangy accents drive me nuts after a while. ill
Most modern rap: Alternative/underground rap, I don't mind, but everything else today ALL SOUNDS THE FUCKING SAME. And it's boring and extremely obnoxious to boot.
Hair metal: Cheesy as fuck.
'80s dance-funk: Same. Now I can only stand to listen to the more organic '70s funk.
Death metal: I LOVE metal music... classic, thrash, alternative, industrial... but the "bear taking a shit" style of vocalizing isn't my cup of tea.
Nu-metal: Originals like '90s Korn, Deftones, System Of A Down, etc. I love... everybody else is a bunch of Korn clones. I'll admit to having my guilty pleasure songs within the genre, though.
Progressive rock: Boring... unless we're talking about more universal or accessible bands like Pink Floyd, Tool, Porcupine Tree, etc.

If I think of any more I'll post 'em.

Never mind. If you don't go to heaven at least you'll aviod the gospel singers.

I've heard some christian people say there are two heavens, one with Cliff Richard and one without him. Know which one I prefer - without!

That reminds me of that Dead Kennedys' song "Triumph of the Swill" that starts out with the voice-over:

"We came home and found our son lying dead on his bed with a gunshot wound. He had his headphones on and there was an Ozzy record on the turntable, so we called our lawyer..."

There's a type of music I can't stand. As yet, it doesn't have a name, so let's just call it Shitty Stadium Vibes.

"Sit Down" - James
"Laid" - James
"A Ship Called Dignity" - Deacon Blue
""Real Gone Kid" - Deacon Blue
"Don't Go" - Hothouse Flowers
"Whole of The Moon" - The Waterboys
Anything by the New Radicals

It's called shitty indie stadium rock i think. The fans who listen to this crap are even worse. Its like gutless rock music.

Yeah, with music I try to be, but movies are a different story. lol Romantic comedies barf

I'm with you. Romantic comedies are rarely romantic or comedic. There are exceptions, of course, but they're rare.

As far as entire genres of music? No. I like some of everything. I think it's tougher for me to find stuff in certain genres, like modern mainstream pop and hip-hop, but there's even stuff there I dig. My mom, my dad, my younger brother, my older brother, my friends and I all listened to different music, and it affected my tastes as a whole.

That's how my house was too. My parents listened to classic R&B,funk, soul,Motown. Whenever we'd stay our Grandma's house during the week, she'd always listen to gospel (like Mahalia Jackson ,Mississippi Mass Choir). My brother was more into metal, classic rock,industrial,grunge,etc.....and when I was younger I mainly liked female artists (mostly the "Lilith Fair" crowd lol), 90's ska bands, dance music, the oldies station. So all these genres made me more open as I got older.
