I'm also not a big fan of improvisational/free-form jazz. I can appreciate the skill and talent that goes into it, but screeching horns can really set my nerves on fire after a minute or so.

When heard live in person face2face, free jazz is an altogether different thing. Very few studio recordings capture the feeling and even live recordings don't measure up. Too often it sounds like musicians practicing, but when you're there on-the-scene you get more of creative spontanaiety.

Isn't there a white supremacist element in some of that music?

no...there is a genre of metal that is extremely racist and all about the "white pride" crap, but it's a whole different thing from death metal. different asthetics, different scene.

REGGAETON!!! mad

While I am an admirer of all types of music, I fucking hate this genre. I thought it was just a passing fad that'll disappear in 5 years or less. But no, it's getting bigger and bigger.

What's the appeal about Reggaeton? It's just the same repetitive beat in every songs with some Spanish Hip-Hop that I can't understand or can't relate to. And the shit is not even real roots Reggae.

God, it's so irritating, especially when I have to hear the latinos blast it out their SUV's in my hood of Harlem (as well as Washington Heights). headache

There's a type of music I can't stand. As yet, it doesn't have a name, so let's just call it Shitty Stadium Vibes.

"A Ship Called Dignity" - Deacon Blue
""Real Gone Kid" - Deacon Blue
"Don't Go" - Hothouse Flowers
"Whole of The Moon" - The Waterboys
Anything by the New Radicals

Real Gone Kid by Deacon Blue might be the single most nauseating song I've ever heard. Pure aural torture.

I have a small soft spot for the Waterboys, but otherwise I'm totally on board with everything you've listed above.

I despise:

Thug rap and/or hip/hop - I do like some rap and some hip/hop, but not those that are nothing but thugs with dough.

New Country
Death metal
techno music
Some pop (such as the Britney's, Linday's and Jessica's of the world)

I'm not a fan of country music or almost any kind of rock, but the worst songs for me are rock ballads (like Celine Dion). Just too painful.

Some songs that are supposed to be for a good cause are also a bit naff (e.g. in the UK charts right now we have Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat). Better to cut out the middleman and just give the money to charity.

I firmly believe that there's good music to be found in every genre. Sure, you might have to try a little harder with some genres than others to find it, but it's there. I don't understand the mentality that can completely write off an entire kind of music. It's very narrow-minded IMO, and the listener in question risks denying themselves a hell of a lot of good tunes if they do.

I understand the theory about genre loyalties being a form of tribal allegiance for the modern world, but it still seems pointless to me for a person to proclaim all rap shit, or all punk shit, or all country shit, etc. without even trying to find the gold in the sound.

That said, there are a lot of particular bands or performers I think suck giant donkey dong, but that's a different issue. razz

Yes, you're right when you say that an entire genre shouldn't be written off as crap even if it has some crappy artists representing it. That's why I think a genre like Emo Rock gets unfairly criticized. The way I see it there's good emo (Thursday, Jimmy Eat World, Dismemberment Plan, At The Drive-In, Q & Not U, Cursive, Les Savy Fav, etc.) and then there's the garbage (My Chemical Romance, Underoath, Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, etc.).

But when you get a genre like Reggaeton where each has the same, repetitive generic beat over and over again, there's not much you can learn and gain from that. Plus I'm....OK at the Spanish language, but I can't appreciate lyrics that I can't proficiently understand. That's why I hate the genre.

At the same time I feel that there's an audience for that kind of music. I'm not apart of it, but hey, whatever. Live and let live. shrug

My 13 yr old daughter listens to all these. I hadn't detected anything to be offensive or garbage about them (I make absolutely no attempt to regulate waht my kids listen to), but she has no interest in hip-hop or stripper-pop. Happily, we've found common ground with Ben Harper. She's more into RHCP, while I'm more for Fishbone.

Wait, what's the difference between RHCP and Fishbone other than color and one being more commercially successful than the other? They've both been band buddies since their humble beginnings in L.A. To me they have the same sound.

Some broadway tunes ain't to be sniffed @ at all.

I thought the whole thing was campy and cheesy untill I heard Nina Simone's take on it,,,,she was the one who really introduced me to it.

Now you won't see me rush to the store and buy a Liza Minnelli/Barbara Streisand/Julie Andrews tape,,,,but I'll be a DAMN LIAR if I said I didn't enjoy watching them doing their big over-the-top theatrical numbers lol

RHCP is cool, I just happen to know the FB guys. Still, I'd say due ue to a combination of RHCP's greater commercial success and race (of her peers) she's heard more RHCP than she's heard FB hanging with Dad.

1. Trance (also the worst Electronic genre ever!
2. EBM/Industrial (ALL artists of this genre sounds the same)
3. Country (mostly traditional)
4. New Age (unless it Enya, because I would love to remix her work)
5. Adult Contemporary Pop (especially Air Supply!)
6. Smooth Jazz (I like Fusion way better).

A large portion of the jazz songbook comes from doing covers of Broadway tunes by Gershwin, Rodgers, Hart & Hammerstein, Sondheim etc etc.

My little sister that is 12 yo is also a great fan of those bands. She stopped listening to pop because of that.

I prefer that fact that she digs Fall Out Boy or My Chemical Romance, instead of her liking some rapper like for example 50 Cent.
