I like this new song, its the most interesting song shes ever put out, maybe someone else is helping her- but hey not everyone can put in their dues at Motown. As for her voice, yeah, I don't get why shes straining, shes pretty decent live, but for me, she's not bad enough here to cringe say like Rhinanna- and I'm not even talking about her singing live. Kind of interested in the new album of Alicia's now. And I don't get this fakeness people are seeing- I think shes channeling all of her heroes (ie stevie) but in a real genuine way. I'm sure shes not faking this to pander to the neo soul market, shes just trying to express the person she wants to be.

I agree that it is the most interesting song she's put out. I think Alicia is really influenced by older artists like Stevie, Isaac, Prince, Aretha and etc. She tries her best to write songs how they would, but we oftentimes percieve it as her trying to be like them, and of course she'll always come up short. The environment is just too different for a great song imo.

How could anyone think that she doesn't have talent or wasn't born for the stage. She rocked it this day.

But a lot of folks feel the same way Graycap & Harlepolis do - that she's overated, has a weak voice, and hasn't improved since her debut.

Look Brosephus,
we know you're in Alicia's cheering squad, and thats cool.
But nobody's saying that she doesn't have the talent, she does.
She's just not using it effectively and has become overhyped throughout the years.
When she first came out she was deemed the female savior of RnB music...
And it turns out she's just another wack ass prophet churning souless swill music.
She can sing, but she doesn't do it effectively.
Her music has submerged with the trivial day to day Rnb/ neo-swill thats being blasted through radio.
When she came out she was mad hoodish and niggerish, which always got to me cause her white ass mother (no disrespect), was behind her all the time claiming to be the reason for her baby's success. Like parents do.
Now Alicia is turning Diva, hence alot of "poser" comments.
As much as i hate to admit it, this girls claim to fame was because she was a light skinned, half white pretty woman who was doin something different in music.
2 albums later...
she's the above, except she's doing nothing different and below fantastic.
But her attitude is like she's Gods gift to music.

See i gave you a decent answer and i didn't even had to mention that she lifts her music from old songs without giving the writers credit.

Thank you!!! See even as a fan of Alicia I appreciate this comment more than just saying she's wack. I respect this.

I've seen her as a poser from day one. Good to see others catching up. In the past I could at least give her credit for having a good voice, but man she's shockingly bad here. At this rate I don't think her voice will last much longer than another 10 years, if that. She needs to take care she doesn't lose it as bad as MJ has.

P.S. How comes everything she does sounds like a cover version even when it's not?

I've come to the conclusion that yall are just harsh in general. I havent heard Planet Earth yet, but some of the reviews are crazy to me. If you all critique all music that way, then of course nothing, present anyway, will ever live up to your expectations.

Honey child can you say anything recent lives up to any expectation?
I mean it's cliche to say today's music sucks, but it does.
But that only refers to t he pop friendly stuff that's being played on the radio.
Alot of NON radio friendly cats who have turned Indie are doing great stuff.

The real deal is the up & commers don't know what good music is because they're being fed this swill. And todays parents think of , When you say legedary album, is The Chronic Album. This allows the industry to manipulate buyers by giving them bad music. It isn't the artist's fault its the industry. They have exed out quality music for cheap marketable music.
It's not us that have High Expectations, it's the industry that wants us to have low expectations.

Throughout history, the vast majority outpuit of pop music has always been bad, but in this age it's getting worse. Music today is either created without melodies and harmonies with a mind numbing drum beat or blantly steals from oldies type of music. It's sloth music.
Nobody wan'ts to put out the extra effort and everybody is lookin for a quick pay check.

If 1977 was the proper end for rock music, than 07 is going to be the end of pop music as we know it.
If not 07, than 08, but it's coming
and then everything has to return back to form.
It's happening with hip hop, it will happen to pop music and rnb

I thought that was what you meant, but the "ur" in your post threw me off. Sounded like an abbreviation for "you're". Online communication, don't you love it?

Always loved that tune. Great lyrics. The clip's funny cos Julian's voice is a copy of his dad and Alicia's is a copy of Mary J Blige.

Empress

I like Alicia and I don't care one way or the other if she's gay, straight or bi AND she has every right to keep her sexual preference to herself.

She's not a great singer, but she's not bad and what I really like about her is the fact that she doesn't act like a bimbo and can sing live and play the piano too. She's never in the news for doing something stupid and she acts like a lady.

Thank you! I also admire the fact that with all of the praise, hype, and ridicule, she managed to keep focus. She has thick skin.

I've been a fan for a while I don't ever recall Alicia acting like a diva, so I'm not sure where your getting that one from. She's no different from any other artist when it comes to being arrogant.
