Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler

You don't see Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler's solo stuff mentioned on here much.

Is that because no-one likes them or are people to embarassed to mention it. smile They became associated with yuppy-rock with Brothers In Arms in the mid 80's with the advent of the CD and sponsorship by Phillips etc, and i'm still not very keen on that album.

But the other albums, Dire Straits/Communique/Making Movies/Love Over Gold and On Every Street are among my favourite albums of all time.

Mark Knopfler has a new album out called Kill to Get Crimson on 17th September in case anyone's interested...

Not too much into Dire Straits but Mark made an excellent album with Emmylou Harris last year called 'All The Roadrunning'...it is a great album and their voices sound great together...

Yeah, I think Golden Heart is his best solo album, but my favourite track is Junkie Doll from Sailing to Philadelphia; the ending is great.

And his albums always sound great too as you say.

I heard "Shangri-La" at my drummer's place a few weekends ago..I was actually blown away by it. Knopfler's a great player and always has a great tone.

Mark Knopfler is a badass on guitar. I love his note selection, droll delivery/lyrics (wasn't he an English teacher?) and overall sound. I even had one of The Notting Hillbillies albums smile

There's a guitar break in "Calling on Elvis" that's truly badass.

I know he/they are very well respected, and were a pretty huge band in the pre-/ealy-MTV age. But I've just never gotten it. shrug

I love his solo stuff, but I still prefer the Dire Straits stuff overall. Love Over Gold is brilliant even though it only has 5 tracks on it, Telegraph Road at 12 minutes long is absolutely epic in scope and atmosphere.
