Ready for the curl - Long time coming

Do any of you know how this album is? Is it worth checking out? How does it compare to the first one?

I remember waiting for this album to be released big time. I was very curious to see how their follow up was going to be. Their debut was bangin'. A very solid album. But then I when I bought it and played it,....man. What a let down. Great album cover but that's about it. Essentially, they blew it. They had all of their best shit, probaly written and stored for a few years, all on their first album. That's why it was so good. But when it came time to follow that up, they didn't have enough good shit ready. That's why you have to always keep writing and if u can, keep recording. So you're not caught with your pants down and shit when u get in the spotlight.

I like this album alot more than the debut....maybe because it wasn't as overplayed as the first album? Not sure if that's the reason, but I enjoy 'A Long Time Coming' much more. The Prince influence is all over this album. The clever "Mary Goes Round" is exactly the type of nasty synth-funk that Prince was doing just a few years earlier. The hypnotic "Baby (Let Me Love You)" features a haunting synth line stolen from "Little Red Corvette".The last track "Do You Get Enough" had "hit single" written all over it.I never understood why it was never released as a single. It got alot of radio aiplay in my area.Other great songs include the truly funky "Some People Don't Care",the cool slow jam "It's All The Game" and the title track.

To me,the weakest song is the first single "Love You Down".It's too bad that this song became the album's biggest hit...there are much stronger songs on the albums.

hmmm I think the first two albums are fine, for the most part. It's the third album ('Rough N' Ready') where they lost their way.I was really disappointed with that one.

No, if you like the first album then get this one. It's not as good, but it doesn't suck either. I like a lot of the songs on it.

I haven't played it since the late 1980s and can't remember what some of the songs sound like except for "Mary Goes Round" and "Love You Down". I would have to pull it from my stack and play it again to refresh my memory.

I do remember not liking the album as much as their first album though.

I think the album was originally going to be called "Do You Get Enough" but was changed to "Long Time Coming" at the last minute (When I bought the 45 single of "Love You down" it said from the forthcoming RFTW album "Do You Get Enough"). I also wonder why "Do You Get Enough" was never released as a single.

I like this album about the same as their debut album. You forgot the slow jams "In My Room" with an intensity that build throughout the song and "Here I Am".

If you liked their first album, most likley you will enjoy this one.

The 12" version of "Long Time Coming" was hot, I recall. I also have the 12" of "Mary Goes 'Round" which is around 9 minutes.

And see, I liked Rough and Ready better than the previous albums and I liked their "Straight Down To Business" album over all the albums. That's when they decided to go Tony Toni Tone' and dress like them (1990) but the cuts were good off that album.

Anyone have Mel's solo joint?

Yep. That's the thing about being on here. It's all based on opinions. You'll have one who thinks one thing and then 4 more who thinks something else. I would consinder SoulAlive's opinion though. At least he just didn't disagree with me just for the sake of disagreeing because I posted. U know? He never does that shit. He's thing is always valid. And I agree with some of what he siad about the album. I spoke soley on the let down compared to the first one, which I definately favor. When I think of RFTW, I ONLY think of their debut. It's like I forget all about the second album. That's because it didn't make an impression on me at all. I couldn't stand the single "Let Me Love You Down". When I think of that song, I ALWAYS think of that mimic song "Let Me SCRUB You Down" that came out sometime after. It was exactly the same but with of course, different lyrics. I don't know who sung it, but that shit was funny.

But as I was saying, I agree with David in the sense that, yeah, "Mary Goes Round" is a cool track. The best one on there, I think. Should have been the lead off single. The album isn't "horrible", but it's FAR from the first one. Again, I think it was a big drop off. The production; the sound, arrangements, so forth, on this album, are better. U can tell they had a bigger budget and probably more time to do it. But the songs themselves, overall, just aren't there. Not like the first one, where it was waaay more cohesive.

Back in the day, I was a serious RTFW fan and I sometime say that Mint Condition was the 90's Jam/Lewis Approved Version of Ready For The World.

Overall, when it comes down to Ready, they were cool up to the nineties. Their new jack transitions wasn't their niche despite the My girlie single. However, I must say that Melvin solo Cd was pretty good eventhough the radio didn't want to give much airplay and the single off the CD did Ok.
