Exactly it clearly shows that Starbucks at least can push a record by a 65 year old guy, with no Radio or Vh1 or MTV play and keep him in the top 10 for a month, while people on radio and mtv 24/7 can do that.

Starbucks...who would have thought 10 years ago that a coffee company would start their own label and have a market share in the music business!

I heard they've been considering taking on other 'not of the moment but still can be relevant given the proper promotion' artists such as Alanis Morisette and Jewel...both who are no longer or are one album away from leaving their current label contracts.

Yeah those two are both label-less at the moment, Alanis already did something with Starbucks and that Jagged Little Acoustic CD which did well for her. Jewel i can see doing well too, Jewel said recently that she doesnt fit at Pop radio because singer songwriters are for some reason called "Country" now. The other reason that this really works for Starbucks and the artists, is that they really can just do the promotion themselves, via their own websites, and if they have good loyal followings, Starbucks cant lose at all. I think Starbucks and these moves might actually save the "music".

FLASH POINTS

• At first it seemed like it was going to be a tough battle for the top slot on The Billboard 200, with fresh-faced Disney darling Miley Cyrus going up against everyone's favorite "American Idol," Kelly Clarkson. However, in the end, Cyrus easily scores her first No. 1 album, as the confusingly titled "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus" set bows atop the chart with a whopping 326,000 units. Clarkson's "My December" starts with a still very handsome 291,000 in the runner-up slot ... The "Hannah/Miley" album is a two-disc, 20-song set evenly divided between music from Cyrus' TV series "Hannah Montana" and Cyrus' debut studio album. On one side of the album is cover art for the "Hanna Montana 2" soundtrack, while the other side boasts artwork for "Meet Miley Cyrus." Think of it as a more complicated "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below," but for the tween set. The first "Hannah Montana" soundtrack also debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 last October with 281,000 ... Because of the nature of the new double album, it also is eligible for our Top Soundtracks chart, where it starts at No. 1 as well ... The two-disc set carries a list price of $22.98, but was sale priced between $11.98 and $14.99 last week.

• Cheer up Kelly Clarkson fans. Just because "My December" didn't debut at No. 1, all hope is not lost. After all, her smash "Breakaway" album -- which spent 103 weeks on The Billboard 200 and sold 5.8 million in the U.S. -- debuted and peaked at No. 3 (with 250,000 in its first week). Clarkson does have one chart-topper -- her 2003 "Thankful" debut started in the penthouse with 297,000 ... The new "December" album has been caught in a public relations nightmare over the past few months. Its first single, "Never Again," stalled at No. 20 the CHR/Top 40 radio chart -- a disappointment considering Clarkson's recent track record. All five singles from "Breakaway" reached the top five on the CHR/Top 40 chart ... Then, there was all of that talk -- true or not -- about how Clarkson's record label, RCA, had allegedly reacted negatively to "My December." You know the rest of the story: Clarkson goes on the defensive, splits with her manager and cancels her summer concert tour due to poor ticket sales ... Will "My December" be around in December? Time well tell -- after all, "Breakaway" was in it for the long haul. This week, "My December's" second single, "Sober," officially hits U.S. radio.

• Ryan Adams scores his first top 10 album as "Easy Tiger" debuts at No. 7 with 61,000 units. He's charted eight previous times on The Billboard 200, with his highest placing album being 2005's "Cold Roses," which topped out at No. 26. His last effort, 2006's "29," debuted and peaked at No. 144 ... "Easy Tiger" was available in Starbucks and Hear Music stores packaged with an extra track. Additionally, the Apple iTunes Store offered the album as a pre-order where consumers received a bonus track, a video and access to concert tickets before the general public. 30% of the album's first-week sales were sold via digital retailers ... Beastie Boys' instrumental album "The Mix-Up" starts at No. 15 with 44,000. The trio's last instrumental set, "The In Sound From The Way Out!," debuted and peaked at No. 45 with 22,000 in 1996. The Boys are on tour through the summer. On Saturday (7) they play the Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in London, followed by the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 9 and 10. They are mingling their own solo stops with festival shows and currently have dates slated through September 9.

• Other big debuts on The Billboard 200 this week include Pearl Jam's "Live at the Gorge" at No. 36 with 19,000 units. The seven-disc Rhino package, which carries a $43.98 list price, chronicles three shows at the Gorge venue near the Columbia River in Washington ... Paul Simon's double disc "Essential" album bows at No. 42 with 17,000 units. The Warner Bros. set gathers together his solo hits dating back to his 1972 No. 4 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Mother and Child Reunion" ... The late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole debuts at No. 44 with "Wonderful World," selling 17,000 units. It's his biggest sales week ever, helping him garner his second No. 1 on Top World Music. The album was released on June 26, exactly 10 years after his death in 1997. The set pairs Kamakawiwo'ole's vocals and ukelele instrumentation with a newly recorded full orchestra. Kamakawiwo'ole has been a fixture on our World Music charts since early 1997. Collectively, the nine albums from Kamakawiwo'ole that are being tracked by Nielsen SoundScan have sold 1,841,000 in the U.S

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 8.83 million units
• DOWN 0.84% from last issue's charts: 8.90 million units
• DOWN 8% from same week, 2006: 9.59 million units
• This week: The top three albums sell more than 100,000 copies.
• This week last year on The Billboard 200: India.Arie scored her first No. 1 as "Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship" opened in the top spot with 161,000. Dashboard Confessional's "Dusk & Summer" arrived at No. 2 with 134,000. Only the top two albums sold more than 100,000 units.

BORDERLINES

• The No. 50 album this week, Ozzy Osbourne's "Black Rain," (Epic/Sony Music) sold 14,000.
• The No. 50 album for the same week of 2006, Andrea Bocelli's "Amore," (Sugar/Decca/Universal) sold 18,000.
• Average total of the No. 50 album for the same week of the year during the past 10 years (1998-2007): 24,582.

PROGRESS REPORTS

• Kenny Chesney logs the quickest ascent into the top five on the Hot Country Songs chart in three years as "Never Wanted Nothing More" rises 9-5 in its fifth chart week. Chesney's rise is the fastest since Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying" jumped 8-5 in its fifth frame on the Country list dated June 25, 2004. "Dying" would go on to spend seven weeks at No. 1 -- McGraw's longest-running chart-topper ... To find a new title with fewer weeks than Chesney's single on the chart, you have to look all the way down to No. 24, where Toby Keith's "Love Me If You Can" moves 29-24 in its fourth week ... Sugarland rises 20-18 with "Everyday America," its fifth consecutive top 20 single (and seventh overall). The duo's last two singles, "Want To" and "Settlin'," both reached the top of the chart. Thus far, the act's new album, "Enjoy The Ride," has sold 1.1 million copies in its first 34 weeks -- that's more than double what debut set "Twice the Speed Of Life" did in the same span of time ... Meanwhile, Josh Turner debuts on Hot Country Songs at No. 58 with "Firecracker." It's the first single from his third album, due Oct. 30. Of his previous six chart entries on Hot Country Songs, four of them reached the top 20, including the back-to-back No. 1s "Your Man" and "Would You Go With Me" in 2006. His two albums -- 2003's "Long Black Train" and 2006's "Your Man" -- have sold 3.1 million in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan.

• Hollywood Records claims its first top 10 on the CHR/Top 40 radio chart in more than two years as "Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's jumps 12-9. The label was last in the top 10 on the chart dated March 26, 2005, when Jesse McCartney's "Beautiful Soul" spent its final week in the top 10 ... Also making a move into the top 10 is season six "American Idol" finalist Elliott Yamin with his debut single "Wait For You." The track -- which moves up one spot to No. 10 -- also becomes independent label Hickory Records' first-ever top 10. Yamin is the fifth "American Idol" contestant to reach the chart's upper quadrant, following Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry (as leader of Daughtry), Mario Vazquez and Carrie Underwood.

• Linkin Park's "What I've Done" spends an amazing 13th week at No. 1 on the Alternative/Modern Rock chart, becoming the band's longest-running No. 1 hit. It surpasses the 12 weeks lined up by "Numb" in 2003 and 2004 ... Since the chart began in 1988, only 10 songs have spent 13 weeks or more atop the list. They are: Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Otherside" (13), Nickelback's "How You Remind Me" (13), Incubus' "Drive" (13), Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dani California" (14) and "By The Way" (14), Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy" (15), the Peppers' "Scar Tissue" (16), Staind's "It's Been Awhile" (16) and Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (16) ... Back on this week's Alternative/Modern Rock chart, Linkin Park's new single, "Bleed It Out," rises from No. 28 to No. 22 in its third week ... At No. 40, Evans Blue debuts with "The Pursuit," the act's second chart entry. It follows "Cold (But I'm Still Here)," which peaked at No. 28 in April 2006. "The Pursuit" is the first single from the band's new Hollywood Records album, "The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal of Life Ends," due July 24 ... Finally, in completely different news, thanks to new dance mixes of Stevie Nicks' classic "Stand Back," the single rises 14-6 on Hot Dance Club Play this week, surpassing the No. 12 peak of the original tune back in 1983 ... Nicks is currently on tour with dates lined up through July 28 in Phoenix.

Exactly it clearly shows that Starbucks at least can push a record by a 65 year old guy, with no Radio or Vh1 or MTV play and keep him in the top 10 for a month, while people on radio and mtv 24/7 can do that.

VH1 is actually playing the video...when they play videos, which is around 5 AM!

T.I. TOO MUCH: Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. will have the best-selling album in the country next week. Better known as Atlanta rapper T.I., the Grammy-winning hip-hop star’s new release, T.I. vs. T.I.P., on his own Grand Hustle label through Atlantic, looks headed over the 500k mark, heating up the summer sales season and easily making him next week’s #1 album. Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland is up next with her sophomore album for Columbia, Ms. Kelly, the follow-up to her 2002 effort, Simply Deep, on target for sales over 100k, according to reports from retailers still recovering from Fourth of July fireworks. RCA’s new Velvet Revolver album, Libertad, the successor to the 2004 double-platinum debut, Contraband, sees the rock supergroup at, or just shy of, the 100k mark. (7/5p)

Since Hanna Montana and High School Musical are carrying labels at this point they should sign this girl to a deal fast, Im sure she would sell a few million just on her popularity from the teen crowd and tv show.

I'm sure thats the plan...very much the way Hilary Duff went from 'Lizzy McGuire' to using her real name...

Well, hopefully, if they do, she doesn't change her eating habits.
