Someone had to say it:

Someone had to agree with it! biggrin

agreed! though the second half of off the wall drags, it's first half more than makes up for it.

and if History could lose "childhood" and Dangerous could lose "will u be there"

also, if you were gonna go Madonna:

You Can Dance
Like A Prayer
I'm Breathless
Erotica
Bedtime Stories

of course there is always Amos:

Earthquakes
Pink
Pele (this is the one that almost ruins it for me)
Choirgirl (!)
Venus

Erykah Badu Live

Mama's Gun

WWU

...2007 release...

razz

what about missy?

supa dupa fly
da real world
miss e
under construction
this is not a test (great album!)

you just can't go janet

(dream Street)
Control
RN1814
janet
velvet rope
(All 4 U)

the first and last are just too dogshitty.

and prince just don't have 5 consecutive...around the world in a day, parade, and musicology ruin it

shake Will You Be There is the best version of that type of song he's ever done! biggrin It should lose Gone Too Soon. And I agree about Childhood, but it needs to lose a few of the "i'm a badass" and "everyone's always picking on me" songs as well before it's a classic.

Talking Heads '77
More Songs About Buildings and Food
Fear of Music
Remain in Light
(The Name of this Band is Talking Heads)
Speaking in Tongues
(Stop Making Sense)

The two in parenthesis are live albums, but they're also stellar.

I'm not sure how to count Rattle and Hum - I think all of the studio tracks are stellar, and like the live songs too...but if we're only counting studio albums, I'm not sure what I'd classify the album as...

yeah, that's tricky. incidentally, not counting that one, i'd add War and nix Pop. but if you include R&H, then i'd have to say they don't have a 5-disc consecutive run sad i like the live stuff. and i like the studio stuff. i don't like them together all mixed up.

All Day Music
The World Is A Ghetto
Deliver The World
Why Can't We Be Friends?

but I still think Prince had the longest run:

Dirty Mind
Controversy
1999
Purple Rain
Around The World In A Day
Parade
Sign 'O' The Times
Lovesexy

All great!

I agree, that was an INCREDIBLE run of great albums for any artist. Careerwise, I think Prince has had the greatest creative run overall.

There have been many great albums by the likes of The Beatles, Bowie, Dylan and, of course, Prince but I don't know of any 5 albums made consequetively that would beat:

Stevie Wonder:

Music of my Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale and Songs in the Key of Life.

This is in terms of groundbreaking, songwriting, musically and just all round god darn funky and moving tracks!

Any advances?

IMO, this is the best, for the reasons you stated. As much as I like Prince, his 80's creative streak was a notch below Stevie's

See, I tried to choose my words very carefully there. I certainly don't think the run is ruined by any stretch. Still, I have a hard time acknowledging an album as excellent or great when I have to skip a track 100% of the time (as is the case with "Revolution 9" in particular). It also blows my mind that there are so many people who would proclaim Revolver as one of the greatest albums of all time (and even the greatest) when it has such a lackluster song like "Yellow Submarine" on it.
[Edited 7/4/07 14:11pm]

I like Yellow Submarine. Sure, it is far from the Beatles best, but it is a great children's song. I can't hate on a song that introduced me to the Beatles.

I can! Hate, hate, hate! evillol

I also hate "Can't Buy Me Love." Still can't believe it kept their great cover of "Twist and Shout" from reaching #1...

hmm, that's not really the sequence of 5 i'd expect. more like his first 8, really, though i did like Human Touch and Lucky Town. haven't heard the last 2 yet.

I know...I know...Born to Run/Darkness/River/Nebraska/U.S.A., right?

I'm not much of a fan of the romanticism of the earlier records (although I love "The Promised Land", "Darkness" and "Be True" - and, yes, I know "Be True" was a B-side). Honorary mention to "Backstreets".

I briefly considered Nebraska/U.S.A./Tunnel/HT/LT, but I think he just continues to mature as a writer and I couldn't omit Joad (just 'cause the title track lays waste to that romanticism in one fell swoop: "The highway is alive, tonight / But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes". And "Galveston Bay" is such a great piece of writing) or The Rising's "Nothing Man", "Mary's Place", "You're Missing" or "Paradise".

Indeed.

With both those cats, if you lined up those albums against a wall in chronological order, you could almost throw a dart and whichever album it hit count 5 albums forward or backwards and make an argument.

Glad to see someone else is with me. None of the runs I've seen listed save for Stevie's match up, IMHO.
