This point has to be reinterated again .Just because the work of Grassroot Activist & Parents doesn't get media publicity(in fear of blacklash from industry or industry heavy hitters)dosen't mean it should be ignored.

Sigh.. you know I have to say I blame the black community for a good part of the rap scene these days, we did nothing to stop this train wreck, we saw it coming in the 90's when every R& B song had to have a rap in it. The remixes of a song became nastier and then rap became more an more popular on the radio. Next the music industry came along and did what it always does; it took a beautiful art form and just pushed and promoted what was easy. Sex sells and with BET on board that made it all the easier. We should have BEEN protesting this shit, turning off the TV, shutting off the damn radio, and making our knuckle head kids do the same. I have always felt once this gutter rap really starts to have a negative impact on their community then and only then will you see something done about it. I stopped listening to the radio a long time ago so I don't know how bad it is right now, but I know it is bad when folks are naming decent rap artists (here) and no one yet has mentioned KRS1

Black people have short term memory, and often like to re-write history to make themselves feel good about themselves.

The biggest black influence on rock guitar was a dope head.
George Clinton was dope head singing about dope.
Sly Stone was a dope head and a thug.
The biggest influences in jazz = dope heads, and thugs.
James Brown a dope head and a women beater, for every song he had about politics he had 20 about getting some pussy, and dancing.
Some of the lyrics in Prince's songs are far worse then what many rappers have said.
Let's not even get into the shit that started all this shit: work songs, the blues and country folk song.

All 80's rap was not on some KRS 1 intellectual dishonest back to Africa rhetoric.

You make a valid point.I too wonder why it took so long for folks to speak up and complain.Gangsta rap has been around since the late 80s.Why did it take Don Imus to finally make us wake up and re-examine hip-hop? confuse I saw on the news the other day,the NAACP was holding a big funeral for the "N-word".

Would you please stop making excuses for the sorry state of today's hip-hop? When you mentioned all of those classic artists (Sly Stone,George Clinton, etc),the one thing you conveniently forgot to mention is that they all have TALENT.James Brown basically invented funk. These guys were pioneers, and they didn't have to steal/sample from nobody. They created music themselves, from scratch....something that the rappers are incapable of doing. And if you actually take the time to listen to the songs of Sly and James, you would see that their lyrics are (mostly) uplifting and positive.I didn't hear alot of "bitch","ho" and "fuck you!" in their work. They didn't do alot of degrading women in their songs. They didn't have to rely on profanity to sell records.Didn't need to.Listen to the classic 70s albums by Stevie Wonder,Earth Wind and Fire,The Commodores, etc, and show me where all the profanity and negativity is at.Show me where they're degrading women and using the "N" word excessively,or getting up onstage and doing a minstrel show.Show me where they were embarrassing themselves and their race.

.

You are forgiven. I am black too and for the record, I never said KRS1 represented all 80's rap nor did I say he was all intellect all the time back in the day(or even today). What my point was, that you missed, is that I feel we black folks let this art form be publicly represented in a such negative way. Its like we had our eyes closed. We hear just about the same content in rap from every single artist on the radio today. I want diversity. I Know there are decent artist who makes DECENT music and YES they say bitch, ho, fuck, pimp,n*gga, and everything else. The difference is that is not ALL they have to say. I still love hip-hop, I listen to it every day (just not on the radio), there are some amazing artist who make great music. But radio will never let them see the light of day (for whatever reason). I never said that I flushed hip hop down the toilet as a whole. I just put some the responsibility on us as a people, we should have demanded a diversity with our dollars a long time ago.

And he can't make a Beat without a Sample or having a REAL Musician playing an Instrument in it. He is one of the reasons why young kids today would rather get a Fruity Loops beat making program on there CPU & create some Myspace Profile Promoting some Half Ass made in there Bedroom Album....Playing an instrument isn't considered Hip Hop. I forgot.

The Roots is one of the only Hip Hop acts that keep the Musicianship alive in this rapidly dying Industry.

There is nothing wrong with sampling.....as long as it is done with some kind of originality and creativity. Being a DJ,I have used samples in my mixes in ways that you would never know. I think the problem is when people wanna take the easy way out, sample a JB song and then calling it a day. James, was partly to blame because he NEVER said no. Why, cause he was getting a cut. The state of Hip-Hop, is totally our fault and when I say our, I mean all of us who listen to it and do nothing about it when we hear something, negative. We sit there and say nothing when the "N" or the "B" words are used. In fact, some of us even sing along. We also pass the blame to others like, Imus, for what he said; but nobody wants to look at the reason why he thought it was okay.....His thinking was,(even though it might have been wrong was), "Hell, I wanna be down, let me use the current hip-hop slang, If rappers use it then it must be okay". If we had spoken up in the first place about how wrong it is to call each other those names, we would not be having this discussion in the first place. Even in this forum, we are passing the blame, cause each one of us in here has purchased a record that contains what we are talking about, but yet we are still blaming others.

What is everyone's major discrepency with sampling? Im so tired of people always saying it means a person lacks talent or puts out garbage because they don't play a live instrument. Garbage musicis garbage music. regardless of if its a live instrument or sampled music. Taking a part of something and making it something new as long as you pay respect where it is due is fine in my book. I think the problem lies in the creative process of the music. Everybody has always had a story to tell, or needed an outlet. Now it seems that more and more people are realizing that you can make a quick dollar by making a song that sounds absolutley fucking ridiculous. my opinion only,
I think alot of these new rappers are just in it for the money and could care less what kind of product they put out. Also the labels dont give a damn about any of what we are talking about on this forum, they dont care about what the NAACP is doing they dont care about anything. If they feel you are not marketable or feel you are incapable of creating what I refer to as "coon music" then you will be shelved and someone elses album will be put out. At the end of the day they are just trying to make money. Now when Concious underground rap starts generating major money then they may change their tune. but for now this is what we have to deal with. MIMS said it best..." I could make a million saying nothin on the track" thats the damn truth. I am at work so I will be ranting a lot more in this thread!!!

The main problem with most Samplers 2day is that they don't even add anything but a weak drum loop 2 the Sample & then call themself a "Producer". Its not like DJ Premier who IMHO is the best Sampler ever, because he uses the Samples like an Instrument & is VERY creative with it making like his own Creation. When I was young & first started in Music I wanted a Drum Machine..but my Mom instead bought me a Keyboard. So when I wanted 2 remake a song I liked.....guess what...I had 2 PLAY it myself. I thank her 4 that..because I'm not like these CPU Producers who couldn't even tell U what Key there song is in. Yet they call themself a Producer?? Sorry, I just can't respect that type of Producer.

I agree. Queen Latifah is an outstanding artist and actress, and her hip-hop in the late 80s and early 90s has stood the test of time. Her opinion also makes sense, since hip-hop needs cleaning up and has needed it since its beginning.

Queen Latifah has become the latest hip-hop artist to urge her peers to tone down their language, insisting black rappers should show off their vocabulary instead of rhyming expletives.

The rapper-turned-actress has called for hip-hop to start policing itself - to make sure the stereotype of uneducated, thuggish stars disappears.

She says: "We should start encouraging people to clean certain songs up because it's just not necessary.

"When you get used to hearing the clean version of a song in the clubs or on the radio all the time and then you hear the explicit version, it's shocking and it's not very creative.

"If you could clean up this record and make it sound this good, why did you ever need to make it like that in the first place? Sometimes cursing is an excuse not to use more vocabulary."

hmmm

This is not surprising at all. Because during the time when Latifah started in the game, profanity was not a priority and skills along with groove was the focus.

Exactly .. i was never deep into rap, but if a rapper had skillz back in the day with a message on the table.. my ears were open to hear it nod

Blame me. I am one of those who bought 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and 2Pac albums, who dances to the Whisper Song and sings along to Get Low at the club (Hi Chris lol).We all have our guilty little pleasures in music, I guess.
BUT I also love Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Common, Ta'Raach, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots and Dead Prez.
I love rap music, always have, always will. And it is hard to defend at times.
Most of the stuff out on the charts is utter crap with no content, but sometimes simply has a cool vibe to it, like My '64 or This is why I'm hot or something.

Of course the good people should have the success and make the money. But name me one business where the good ones are on top earning the money.
I guess all we can do is - not listen to the radio, go underground, support the good ones as far as possible and try to bring their stuff to everyone new to hiphop. Try to make people think about what they're listening to.

And as far as Kanye is concerned - I think he makes beautiful songs out of his samples. Like Roses or Family Business for examples. I wish more producers would put their beats together as artistic as he does.
Not like Timbo for example. I used to like him, but right now he totally copies himself on everything new he puts out. He used to be funny and creative, IMO. Now he's just... party. Pity that. Especially when he said "I'm a real producer, Ure just a pianoman". Don't care if that was adressed to Storch, I just don't like the sound of it. Like being a pianoman is a bad thing.

I'd prefer a Billy Joel song to a Timbaland song any day wink

actually she promoted apache who had a song called gangsta bitch. she was indirectly apart of what is now called a minstrel show.
Yes,America has problems but somehow,I still don't see why you use this as an excuse for the rappers to behave that way.Taking part in a minstrel show isn't gonna solve any problems.
