hmmm I think the first two albums are fine, for the most part. It's the third album ('Rough N' Ready') where they lost their way.I was really disappointed with that one.

Was that when they went New Jack?

nod yeah,on the third album, they started adding New Jack Swing elements to their music.I liked them better when they were stealing from Prince lol

But as I was saying, I agree with David in the sense that, yeah, "Mary Goes Round" is a cool track. The best one on there, I think. Should have been the lead off single. The album isn't "horrible", but it's FAR from the first one. Again, I think it was a big drop off. The production; the sound, arrangements, so forth, on this album, are better. U can tell they had a bigger budget and probably more time to do it. But the songs themselves, overall, just aren't there. Not like the first one, where it was waaay more cohesive.

I agree,"Mary Goes Round" is the standout track music A cool,Prince-inspired jam that should have been the first single.

I like this album alot more than the debut....maybe because it wasn't as overplayed as the first album? Not sure if that's the reason, but I enjoy 'A Long Time Coming' much more. The Prince influence is all over this album. The clever "Mary Goes Round" is exactly the type of nasty synth-funk that Prince was doing just a few years earlier. The hypnotic "Baby (Let Me Love You)" features a haunting synth line stolen from "Little Red Corvette".The last track "Do You Get Enough" had "hit single" written all over it.I never understood why it was never released as a single. It got alot of radio aiplay in my area.Other great songs include the truly funky "Some People Don't Care",the cool slow jam "It's All The Game" and the title track.

To me,the weakest song is the first single "Love You Down".It's too bad that this song became the album's biggest hit...there are much stronger songs on the albums.

I think the album was originally going to be called "Do You Get Enough" but was changed to "Long Time Coming" at the last minute (When I bought the 45 single of "Love You down" it said from the forthcoming RFTW album "Do You Get Enough"). I also wonder why "Do You Get Enough" was never released as a single.

I like this album about the same as their debut album. You forgot the slow jams "In My Room" with an intensity that build throughout the song and "Here I Am".

If you liked their first album, most likley you will enjoy this one.

interesting info wink I think these should have been the singles:

Mary Goes 'Round
Do You Get Enough
It's All A Game
In My Room

that's four strong singles right there

I don't know what album this song came from but I thought "Straight Down To Business" sounded like it was produced by Teddy Riley. Anyone remember that song?

Yeah, that was their last album.

Nope...They have three more albums that I know of:

"She Said She Wants Some" - 2004

"Freak The World" - 1996

And "BYOB" (not sure what year).

One of them without Mevlin (don't remember which one).

damn, between your review and soulalive's i may have to check it out. i'm in need of some new wave funk! i need my fix.

Yep. That's the thing about being on here. It's all based on opinions. You'll have one who thinks one thing and then 4 more who thinks something else. I would consinder SoulAlive's opinion though. At least he just didn't disagree with me just for the sake of disagreeing because I posted. U know? He never does that shit. He's thing is always valid. And I agree with some of what he siad about the album. I spoke soley on the let down compared to the first one, which I definately favor. When I think of RFTW, I ONLY think of their debut. It's like I forget all about the second album. That's because it didn't make an impression on me at all. I couldn't stand the single "Let Me Love You Down". When I think of that song, I ALWAYS think of that mimic song "Let Me SCRUB You Down" that came out sometime after. It was exactly the same but with of course, different lyrics. I don't know who sung it, but that shit was funny.

too true but it's always good to hear what people think. funy enough though i decided to hold off on buying this for now. instead i finally piked up Crmininal minded by BDP and a cd by Soft Cell! Both are excellent!

Do you guys remember their 1987 song "36 Lovers"? It appears on the 'Beverly Hills Cop II' soundtrack headbang I don't know if it was ever released as a single but it got alot of airplay in my area. It's another Prince-sounding jam.

I think their record label (MCA) screwed up on the singles, which is why the album didn't do as well as the debut. They foolishly released the filler track "Here I Am" as a single instead of the superior "It's All A Game" disbelief And they released the title track as a single instead of the catchier "Do You Get Enough"?? That makes no sense.

I don't think "36 Lovers" was ever released as a single but I bought the soundtrack just for that song.

I used to have that soundtrack. There was also a James Ingram song produced by Andre Cymone on there I believe. What an odd pairing.

RFTW also had a song on the Running Scared soundtrack called "I Just Wanna Be Loved".

I don't remember every track on the album since it has been 1980 something
since i have listened to it. Besides love you down, i liked Let Me love you,
and the title track long time coming which they had a video for. I didn't care
for mary goes round. The last album i remember the group doing was straight down to business with can he do it like this. That was the last good track that they recorded that i can think of. I remember Melvin Riley doing that garbage solo album back in 94.
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I like the song "Ceramic Girl" from their first album. It sounds alot like Jesse Johnson.

No, if you like the first album then get this one. It's not as good, but it doesn't suck either. I like a lot of the songs on it.

I agree...if you like the first album, most likely you will like the second album. They don't change up the formula too much. The first album has one advantage though: "Digital Display".That's their best song, imo. The second album doesn't have anything as clever as that.

speaking of Jesse...I think "Some People Don't Care" sounds like a Jesse Johnson song. When Melvin sings "somebody help me sing",he sounds just like Jesse.

"Alot of acts are reaching for the stuff we did,but if you don't know the formula, you should leave it alone"---Jesse Johnson,1986

I think he was obviously referring to RFTW wink
