"Girl power" back as Spice Girls reunite

LONDON (Reuters) - The Spice Girls, who burst on to the music scene with "girl power" and attitude in the 1990s, have reunited for a world tour, their Web site said on Thursday.

"Hey everybodyWe're back Can you believe it!!" Ginger, Sporty, Posh, Scary and Baby Spice announced on their Web site.

The Web site said the group had come together for a world tour and provided a link for fans to buy tickets in 11 cities across the world starting on December 7 in Los Angeles.

The five-member band is the latest in a long line of pop acts to bury past differences and reform, hoping for success where many others have failed.

The Spice Girls boasted album sales of 55 million during their brief career, and hits including "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There" topped charts across the globe.

But the success was short-lived, with Geri "Ginger" Halliwell leaving in 1998, four years after The Spice Girls was created, and the remaining band members going their separate ways after releasing the album "Forever" in 2000.

All now in their 30s, the singers embarked on solo careers with varying degrees of success, and rumours that they may one day reform have circulated for years.

Victoria "Posh" Beckham has maintained the highest profile since the band split, helped by her superstar soccer-playing husband David and regular appearances at fashion shows and on tabloid front pages.

The couple are moving to the United States where David has signed to play for LA Galaxy, and Victoria aims to carve out a career of her own in fashion and television.

Meanwhile, Melanie "Scary" Brown largely disappeared from the public eye until a high-profile paternity case involving Hollywood star Eddie Murphy.

Earlier this month a DNA test confirmed Murphy as the father of Brown's newborn baby girl after he declined to publicly acknowledge paternity.

Spice Girls announce reunion tour

The group won four Brits,
including a lifetime achievement award

The Spice Girls have confirmed they will reform for a world tour to take place in December and January.
The full line-up has not performed on stage since Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell quit in May 1998.

The 11 dates announced include a London show on 15 December, eight days after the tour begins in Los Angeles.

"I think for us it was about celebrating the past, enjoying each other and it's about our fans. It was the right time," said Halliwell.

The only British date is in London, with the venue not yet confirmed. The other European dates are in Cologne and Madrid.

SPICE GIRLS TOUR 2007/08
Los Angeles - 7 December
Las Vegas - 8 December
New York - 11 December
London - 15 December
Cologne - 20 December
Madrid - 23 December
Beijing - 10 January
Hong Kong - 12 January
Sydney - 17 January
Cape Town - 20 January
Buenos Aires - 24 January

'Fears and doubts'

Earlier this month Mel Chisholm, also known as Sporty Spice, told the BBC she had resisted reforming the group in the past because "it was amazing, it was magical. We could never recreate it".

Asked why she had gone back on her word she said: "A girl is allowed to change her mind and also this is something that we have only seriously started this year really.

"I think really all of us have had our fears and doubts but we feel that the time is right."

Halliwell added: "For us it's about celebrating the past, enjoying each other and it's about our fans. It was kind of now or never."

Good-natured

All five women laughed and joked constantly with photographers and reporters, even good-naturedly booing one journalist.

There had been rumours they would perform at the Concert for Diana memorial show in London on Sunday, but with Emma Bunton currently pregnant they decided not to appear.

"We would have loved to have been there this weekend but the timing has been impossible for us," said Chisholm.

As the conference drew to a close, all five women left the stage holding hands as Brown shouted, "You have been spiced!"

Global success

The tour is being put together by Simon Fuller, whose 19 company masterminded the group's global success more than a decade ago.

Under his guidance, the five-piece notched up a string of hits - including Wannabe and 2 Become 1 - while also capitalising on their fame with a stream of sponsorship deals.

Emma Bunton, Mel Brown, Mel Chisholm, Victoria Adams and Geri Halliwell quickly became household names - although they were better known as Baby, Scary, Sporty, Posh and Ginger.

They sold more than 55 million records around the world, and even starred in a film, Spice World.

Halliwell quit in 1998 citing "differences", leaving them to complete a sold-out world tour as a foursome.

Since 2001 each member has since pursued solo careers with varying degrees of success, while Posh Spice has become better known as fashion icon Victoria Beckham.

woot!
I never really dug Posh, she was totally average looking (below average, actually) and always wore that same boring black dress. She had that 'I'm a snobby little bitch' look on her face.
Emma was the little innocent school girl blonde... boring. She's also pretty average lookin'.

Geri is aight, I guess. She was kinda prostitute-ish back in the day. Better looking now than back in the day.

Mel C's sporty look never bothered me. I kinda liked her style cause at least she didn't dress like everybody else and look like a hooker (a la Posh)... besides sporty girls r kinda hot anyway. I think most people see her as the worst dresser & ugliest Spice Girl.

Mel B is just, well, hot. She's even better looking nowadays than she was back in the 90s.

So Emma was the girl I had my first ever boy/girl thing for, so I totally registered. I'm jealous of the twit who got to be her baby daddy. (That was supposed to be me.) mad

Beyond that, I have 2 questions for the Spice Girls fans:

1)You think there will be any new tracks on the hits album coming out in November?

2)Is this possible this could turn into a full force tour, if the shows do well? Or is this REALLY it?

3)You think they will wear the costumes like back in the day? and the dance moves? Or is just showing up and singing, all that we should expect?

i'm curious to see what they will look like by the time the tour rolls around.

Geri, Emma, and Mel B don't even look like they are wearing makeup.
