any essential albums I should look for? These should get you started. You really can't go wrong with any of his stuff; HOWEVER, after awhile some of the songs sound alike,,,but some of the stuff is great. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

If you decide to go with a comp that includes the 70s hits you might consider... ...The Funk Anthology If you decide to dig deeper into his 50s recordings... ...The Very Best of Johnny "Guitar" Watson on Rhino is very good. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Ain't That A Bitch is definitely worth gettin'!
You should also get the Funk Anthology. It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Listen to his 60's recordings.
His singing and pianoplaying, and of course guitarplaying is amazing. In the 50's Etta James toured with him and she has said in interviews that Johnny was the greatest influence on her singing style. Listen to early Johnny Guitar Watson and you hear so much of how Etta James sounds.Similar phrasings and vocalstyles. /peace Manki | |
