Hata's just can't leave it well enough alone.

Because she is great, that's why. She sounds like the best old school soul since Motown, and her tats are cool. She does need to start eating though.

So, no more of this. You can diss Prince all you like, but leave Amy alone.

Amy doesn't get airplay on R&B stations nationally. It's the pop and dance stations that are playing "Rehab". According to Billboard, "You Know I'm No Good" only went as high as #87 on the R&B charts. "Rehab" has yet to make an impression.

Typical statement, take a good soul singer (not great or amazing) with a white face, and people are ready to crown this singer as "the best old school soul since Motown".

Sometimes I wonder if people really know there are plenty of jazz/soul singers all over the US.

If she was dark skinned no way she would have signed a contract with a major. lol

It always surprises me when I see people who really believe we are living in a color blind world... lol

There are PLENTY of black artitss who make the SAME kind of music ALL OVER THE US. Everywhere.

But major labels refuse to sign them because they don't fit the mainstream standard.

If Amy was a dark skinned girl, she would be just another black girl singing old school jazz and soul. Nothing new. Deja Vu.

What is new with Amy is not her music, not her voice, but her appareance, her ethnicity, nobody expects her to look that.

This is what creates the interest. Period.
[Edited 6/28/07 11:54am]

Lord H'ammercy, next somebody's going to be saying that the only reason why Pino Palladino has had so many neo soul joints on lockdown is because he's a tall white dude that looks like Lurch with a mustache! LOLOL!

Although, part of me agree with your assessment. I don't think we live in a colorblind world in the United States. Race is definitely someething that can work for or against a person in the music industry.

It just isn't true when you apply it to the European mentality where music is concerned. They're more open minded. Which conversely, as a quick example (in other genres) is how you end up with singers like Deborah Dyer (aka SKIN) singing the sh** out of some alternative metal in Skunk Anansie or Kele Okareke fronting one of the best post punk revival bands in Europe (Bloc Party) cool. Nobody over here cares about the race bullshit when you're making music. People just wanna play, ya know? Musically things tend to be a bit more mixed up here (literally).

But it is what it is on either side of the pond, I guess...I just know if I appreciate someone's chops or if I like their writing style I could care less if they were orange. Hell, I grew up when AM radio was on it's last legs and spent a childhood saturated by blue-eyed soul (Remember Bobby Caldwell, Hall & Oates? Aaah the good ole days!). Now I live in an environment where some of my best friends are ASTOUNDINGLY talented r&b singers, and they're everything from white German to African to Iranian to Iraqi. What I demand of my soul singers is that they simply be GOOD. Be devoted to their craft. Have an understanding of musicianship. The rest is moot to me.

But this is pretty much what mainstream music is all about now : Timberlake, Thicke, Aguilera, Jojo, Joss Stone Amy Winhouse are taking over the rnb/soul scene.

her appearance does make a difference. But it has absolutely nothing to do with race

Who gives a flying fuck what colour the singers are? For every white artist you mentioned there, there are many successful black artists. Why keep count? It's about the sound

I just wanted to say - Amy Winehouse is the shit, but so is Corrine Bailey Rae, who is black, but fair skin... wink .

I think mainstream America is still caught up with the whole skin complexion thing, (Alicia Keys/Indie Airie for example), but I'm not gonna get into no debate. It is, what it is...

See i think the reason she is popular has to do with her skin color...
Black skin girls who got allegedly got soul are everywhere
not as many white girls

But i like the fact that shes white because it breaks the color barrier in RnB and soul music today...
I use to Dig Justin until he started being timbalands bitch and began releasing swill
I dug the fact that Nsyncs Gone was played on BET cause that was a hot song...
But i still believe its easier for these white cats to get to become popular than black folk...
Cause i see people who sing better than Amy Winehouse everyday, on the trains, in church. The fact is that to america they're just a bunch of sad black people beggin for change...

Its like Chris Rock said... "When you're white the sky's the limit, When you're black the limit's the sky..."

the UK 'popular music' scene, in general, is absolute shit. I guess she stands out as a unique talent on that same 'pop scene' being less main stream than most other chart acts. But as you point out, she aint really nothing new, just something fresh in the charts other than manufactured crap. Great voice though.

But the USA pop music scene is far worse. Believe me.

instead of trying to make us feel bad about ourselves for what we like, why not throw some names out there as a way of saying "if you like amy winehouse, why aren't you listening to...."?

if these underappreciated, underexposed jazz/soul singers you're talking about are so much better than amy winehouse (and i'm certain they could be), why not talk about 'em here and let us all be the judge of what you're talking about?

i'm not asking that to be antagonistic, i'm sincerely interested. who are the "should-be" amy winehouses that you're talking about?

if there are there any artists coming up right now who are fusing old skool soul/r&b with a post-modern/"alternative" sensibility, i'm interested in knowing about them, whether they're black, white, american, icelandic, whatever. musically speaking, i like the recipe.

Ironically, I didn't get into Amy Winehouse until after I saw that infamous "Beat It" performance. Someone posted the Youtube link, and I was curious to see what she sounded like sober. Back to Black is now on loop on my Ipod.

Her latest stuff is certainly a big improvement on her overrated first album, but that's mainly because she's hooked up with a great soul band who know how to throw down a groove. Her songwriting hasn't actually developed. As a singer she's okay, but seriously, if she were black would anyone be raising a fuss? I don't think so. She also has the habit of slurring her words when she sings. I don't know if it's deliberate or if it's just cos she's drunk all the time. Either way someone needs to coax her out of it.

On a personality level though I must say I'm glad to have her around. She ain't a soulless piece of plastic like so many of her peers. She's off her trolley, but she speaks a lot of truth and she helps to puncture the air of self satisfaction the music business is laden with. Nutcases tend to do that. I also like the fact that she KNOWS MUSIC! From Ella, The Shirelles, Dolly Parton to our man Prince, she knows it all. She's a music lover. I didn't know they existed in the pop world.

Her success also proves something record companies have been blind to for too long which is this; if kids are given the chance to hear real music from a young enough artist, THEY WILL BUY IT!

It's not that simple. The shameful truth is that there are thousands of potential Amys or Joss Stones out there who never even get record deals. We can't talk about 'em cos they don't have anything out there. Many just get discouraged after beating their head against a brick wall for too long.
