Back Stabbers or Ship Ahoy

Simple question, the O'Jays Backstabbers or their Ship Ahoy LP.

1972's Backstabbers was their first real major breakthrough ,and boy did it breakthrough. Hit singles like "Time to Get Down," "992 Arguments," and their first top ten in "Backstabbers." and their first #1 hit "Love Train"

1) When the World's at Peace
2) Back Stabbers
3) Who Am I
4) (They Call Me) Mr. Lucky
5) Time to Get Down
6) 992 Arguments
7) Listen to the Clock on the Wall
8) Shiftless, Shady, Jealous Kind of People
9) Sunshine
10)Love Train

By the next year, when Ship Ahoy hit, they were probally the hottest black act around. The hits kept on coming with "Now that We've Found Live," and the top 10 smashes "Put Your Hands Together" and then almighty, "For the Love of Money" probally their most know track.

1) Put Your Hands Together
2) Ship Ahoy
3) This Air I Breathe
4) You Got Your Hooks
5) For the Love of Money
6) Now That We Found Love
7) Don't Call Me Brother
8) People Keep Tellin' Me

I vote for Back Stabbers, but I agree that you can't go wrong with either one! "Back Stabbers" and "992 Arguments" are basically the same song, but damn if it isn't a great one! nod

It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

I'd have to go with "Ship Ahoy" if just for "You Got Your Hooks in Me!" I LOVE the O'Jays, but I'm real partial to their slowjams!!

Ship Ahoy is my pick hands down. That album is perfect from start to finish. "Now That We Found Love" is one of my favorites.

Back Stabbers is among my favorite O'Jays albums, but Ship Ahoy is my favorite.

Both are very good albums.

So with the gun to my head i'll side with...

...Ship Ahoy.

The stellar vocal performances of Eddie Levert on ballads like You Got Your Hooks in Me & Don't Call Me Brother (the kind you don't hear anymore) pushed it over the edge.

Outside of being a great tune, it's got one of the best intros ever. wink

I do love time to get down from the back stabbers album though but this is
really not much of a debate. Ship Ahoy wins this one.

Another good o'jays album is the live in london album. The live versions of

I know..."can't u feel the motion of the ocean". That song truly captures Gamble & Huff's vision of what the slaves felt when they were coming to the US.

SoulAlive

my favorite O'Jays album is 1975's 'Family Reunion' music

but to answer your question....I think 'Back Stabbers' is the superior album.
