Have you seen it????

lol that's a pretty awful album cover. It's as if she's saying "See? I'm not the bitter hag you think I am! I'm smiling, so god damn you all!!"

Other than Molly Malone I like the album, though.

I went through a bunch of those youtube videos and listened to some of my old Sinead tracks, and all I can say is I've fallen in love with her again tonight.

Stunning. Every song evokes an emotional resonance that Prince used to touch from time to time.

I heart sinead...and this performance gives me the chills...

What a fucking voice! Damn! Don't know about the song on first listen, but her voice is incredible. No affectations to break the spell either. That should be something we take for granted, but sadly the disease of overkill is rampant. Must admit I found the other links a bit dull, especally "don't cry for me argentina". That's a song I have no desire to ever hear again. I don't care who's singing it.

While I think Sinead was hot (with hair, anyway) and I admire the Pope & national anthem stands, there's nothing she's doing on guitar here, that Madge couldn't do (and M learned in her forties, something few have the discipline to do). Also, Sinead was a vocal clam machine live until she took some lessons in the mid-‘90s; her rep as a great singer was totally the product of studio editing. Madonna has also become a better lyricist than O’Connor ever was.

Well, of course O'Connor is gonna look more comfortable - Madonna's only been playing the guitar for, what? Seven years?

As for the lyrics thing, what would you say is O'Connor's best lyric?

and sinead was what, twenty when she made it big? if she started playing guitar at 13 they would have been playing the same length of time...and sure, i have no problem with madge trying to expand her musicianship but its apparent that playing guitar does not come natural to her and she needs to just put the damn thing away when she is in public.

fav sinead lyrics:
TROY
(Sinéad O'Connor)

I'll remember it
And Dublin in a rainstorm
And sitting in the long grass in summer
Keeping warm
I'll remember it
Every restless night
We were so young then
We thought that everything
We could possibly do was right
Then we moved
Stolen from our very eyes
And I wondered where you went to
Tell me when did the light die
You will rise
You'll return
The phoenix from the flame
You will learn
You will rise
You'll return
Being what you are
There is no other Troy
For you to burn
And I never meant to hurt you
I swear I didn't mean
Those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead
Oh, does she love you
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?
Do you love her?
Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?
Do you want me?
Should I leave?
I know you're always telling me
That you love me
Just sometimes I wonder
If I should believe
Oh, I love you
God, I love you
I'd kill a dragon for you
I'll die
But I will rise
And I will return
The Phoenix from the flame
I have learned
I will rise
And you'll see me return
Being what I am
There is no other Troy
For me to burn
And you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
Then I wouldn't have tried
And you'd never have known
And I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
No I wouldn't have pulled you close
I wouldn't have screamed
No I can't let you go
And the door wasn't closed
No I wouldn't have pulled you to me
No I wouldn't have kissed your face
You wouldn't have begged me to hold you
If we hadn't been there in the first place
Ah but I know you wanted me to be there oh oh
Every look that you threw told me so
But you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
And the flames burned away
But you're still spitting fire
Make no difference what you say
You're still a liar
You're still a liar
You're still a lawyer

Disagree. I think she's doing very well for someone who started in their 40s and I like to see her play.

Express yourself, don't repress yourself (repeat 4 times)

Chorus:

And I'm not sorry [I'm not sorry]
It's human nature [it's human nature]
And I'm not sorry [I'm not sorry]
I'm not your bitch don't hang your shit on me [it's human nature]

You wouldn't let me say the words I longed to say
You didn't want to see life through my eyes
[Express yourself, don't repress yourself]
You tried to shove me back inside your narrow room
And silence me with bitterness and lies
[Express yourself, don't repress yourself]

Did I say something wrong?
Oops, I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex
[I musta been crazy]
Did I stay too long?
Oops, I didn't know I couldn't speak my mind
[What was I thinking]

(chorus)

You punished me for telling you my fantasies
I'm breakin' all the rules I didn't make
[Express yourself, don't repress yourself]
You took my words and made a trap for silly fools
You held me down and tried to make me break
[Express yourself, don't repress yourself]

Bridge:

Did I say something true?
Oops, I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex
[I musta been crazy]
Did I have a point of view?
Oops, I didn't know I couldn't talk about you
[What was I thinking]

(chorus)

Express yourself, don't repress yourself (repeat twice)
Express yourself, don't repress yourself (repeat twice)

(bridge)
(chorus)

(chorus, with the following spoken substitutions)
[I'm not apologizing]
[Would it sound better if I were a man?]
[You're the one with the problem]
[Why don't you just deal with it]

(chorus, with the following spoken substitutions)
[Would you like me better if I was?]
[We all feel the same way]
[I have no regrets]
[Just look in the mirror]

(chorus, with the following spoken substitutions)
[I don't have to justify anything]
[I'm just like you]
[Why should I be?]
[Deal with it]

While I think Sinead was hot (with hair, anyway) and I admire the Pope & national anthem stands, there's nothing she's doing on guitar here, that Madge couldn't do (and M learned in her forties, something few have the discipline to do). Also, Sinead was a vocal clam machine live until she took some lessons in the mid-‘90s; her rep as a great singer was totally the product of studio editing. Madonna has also become a better lyricist than O’Connor ever was.

Actually Madonna first started playing guitar in her early 20s. There's footage of her playing in her band at that time with Steve Bray on drums. She gave up being a musician though as soon as she got a record deal and realised it wasn't necessary to be successful.
As for your comments on Sinead's voice I suggest you look at the link at the top of this thread. Sinead sounds incredible. She's a real singer, unlike Madonna. Also she's playing guitar unaccompanied by any other musicians so there's no question mark about what we're hearing. The day Madonna does the same, and looks and sounds confident doing it, is the day I'll view her guitar as something more than a prop.

Oh, I'm aware she "played" guitar in that band. Regardless, she was essentially starting from scratch when she picked it up in 2000 (or whatever).

Oh, I looked at it. She was certainly passable within a limited range at that point, but there are recorded performances where she's hitting harsh, harsh clams all over the place. Even now, post-lessons, I would still say that Madonna's become a better vocalist than she is.

Also she's playing guitar unaccompanied by any other musicians so there's no question mark about what we're hearing. The day Madonna does the same, and looks and sounds confident doing it, is the day I'll view her guitar as something more than a prop.

Didn't Madonna play solo on that Matt Lauer interview a few years back? As for looking confident, who cares about that? I still stand by every word in this post:

You must have typed this straight from the Planet Mars. Your words bare no relation to what is in that link. "Passable within a limited range"? Please. Her voice there sounds just like it does on Nothing Compares 2 U. Ethereal, haunting and passionate. She is in a different universe to Madonna vocally. Did you see Madonna's interview on The Parkinson Show? He asked her to sing acapella. She tried to get out of it, but he insisted. Well, she only managed to sing two and a half lines, cos the audience started laughing. She apologised saying "It sounds better with accompaniment". The woman can't even sing a few lines on a chat show and you're trying to tell us she's a "better vocalist than Sinead"??! confuse

You'll have to post a link to that as I missed it. I remember reading an interview with her where she said she played guitar on TV and she was terrified all week in case she messed up so she'd been practising every day with her guitar teacher. I guarantee you Sinead wasn't practisisng all week with her guitar teacher before she did that performance. You can see and hear her confidence. She knows how to play so she's free to concentrate on the emotion. She's also doing it in front of what looks like at least 10,000 people, but she knows she can pull it off without being boring. You can do that when you've genuinely got the goods.

You may not like Madonna's voice, but she hits a far lesser percentage of flats:

You'll also notice that she does this here balls-out, with no processing. In all of the Sinead clips posted, her voice is swamped in reverb, amongst other effects.

Just to put all this in context here's a recent performance from Cyndi Lauper doing True Colours on the dulcimer. In fairness she has a keyboard player in the back there, but I think most will agree it's in a different league altogether.

about the topic in question, i would feel ripped off paying madonna money for concert tickets if her show was going to be mostly her trying to find her way around a guitar, but fortunately it seems like it's just for a couple of songs, in which case, it's like, fine, let the poor woman try to show off her skills, it's cute, whatever. it's just like why i didn't go to sinead's last tour - i didn't want to see sinead do reggae sunsplash for an entire show, so knowing that's what it was going to be, and not being a fan of her reggae album, i didn't go. i quite like her new album 'theology', which is a nice, pretty, acoustic album, so if that's what i'm in for, then i'll probably go see it live. if she throws in a couple of reggae songs, then whatever. it's what she's on about these days, let her get it out of her system as long as it's a smaller part of the show. shrug

You'll also notice that she does this here balls-out, with no processing. In all of the Sinead clips posted, her voice is swamped in reverb, amongst other effects.

falloff

dude, okay..your joking...i get it now.

Sinead's vocal performance is so ridiculously weak and clam-ridden here that, even with S's mic loaded with reverb, etc., Madonna's totally raw vocal is more palatable (and, technically, way more precise).

eek What can I say?. The horrendous high notes were one thing, but the RAP!!! lol lol lol OMG, this is the woman you call a great lyricist? "I cried all day/ Till the neighbours went away/ My father went to work/ I thought he was a jerk". LOL!!

And Sinead's horrendous, horrendous low notes (among others)?

Re: the rap: yeah, I think it sounds silly, too. But that's a product of context. And you don't think S hasn't dropped her share of completely silly lyrics? Sinead O'Connor fan, please! talk to the hand

about the topic in question, i would feel ripped off paying madonna money for concert tickets if her show was going to be mostly her trying to find her way around a guitar, but fortunately it seems like it's just for a couple of songs, in which case, it's like, fine, let the poor woman try to show off her skills, it's cute, whatever.

Exactly.
