Have you seen it???? that's a pretty awful album cover. It's as if she's saying "See? I'm not the bitter hag you think I am! I'm smiling, so god damn you all!!" Other than Molly Malone I like the album, though. And to the "taking a poo " comment from Shreds I love Sinead--don't get me wrong. But lawd, that girl needs to call one of those makeover shows on Style network or some shit.

I went through a bunch of those youtube videos and listened to some of my old Sinead tracks, and all I can say is I've fallen in love with her again tonight.
Stunning. Every song evokes an emotional resonance that Prince used to touch from time to time. Love

No affectations to break the spell either. That should be something we take for granted, but sadly the disease of overkill is rampant. Must admit I found the other links a bit dull, especally "don't cry for me argentina". That's a song I have no desire to ever hear again. While I think Sinead was hot (with hair, anyway) and I admire the Pope & national anthem stands, there's nothing she's doing on guitar here, that Madge couldn't do (and M learned in her forties, something few have the discipline to do). Also, Sinead was a vocal clam machine live until she took some lessons in the mid-‘90s; her rep as a great singer was totally the product of studio editing. Madonna has also become a better lyricist than O’Connor ever was.

Actually Madonna first started playing guitar in her early 20s. There's footage of her playing in her band at that time with Steve Bray on drums. She gave up being a musician though as soon as she got a record deal and realised it wasn't necessary to be successful. As for your comments on Sinead's voice I suggest you look at the link at the top of this thread. Sinead sounds incredible. She's a real singer, unlike Madonna. Also she's playing guitar unaccompanied by any other musicians so there's no question mark about what we're hearing. The day Madonna does the same, and looks and sounds confident doing it, is the day I'll view her guitar as something more than a prop. Oh, I'm aware she "played" guitar in that band. Regardless, she was essentially starting from scratch when she picked it up in 2000 (or whatever). As for your comments on Sinead's voice I suggest you look at the link at the top of this thread. Sinead sounds incredible. She's a real singer, unlike Madonna.
Oh, I looked at it. She was certainly passable within a limited range at that point, but there are recorded performances where she's hitting harsh, harsh clams all over the place. Even now, post-lessons, I would still say that Madonna's become a better vocalist than she is. Also she's playing guitar unaccompanied by any other musicians so there's no question mark about what we're hearing. Didn't Madonna play solo on that Matt Lauer interview a few years back? As for looking confident, who cares about that? You must have typed this straight from the Planet Mars. Your words bare no relation to what is in that link. "Passable within a limited range"? Please. Her voice there sounds just like it does on Nothing Compares 2 U. Ethereal, haunting and passionate. She is in a different universe to Madonna vocally. Did you see Madonna's interview on The Parkinson Show? He asked her to sing acapella. She tried to get out of it, but he insisted. Well, she only managed to sing two and a half lines, cos the audience started laughing. She apologised saying "It sounds better with accompaniment". The woman can't even sing a few lines on a chat show and you're trying to tell us she's a "better vocalist than Sinead"??! Didn't Madonna play solo on that Matt Lauer interview a few years back? You'll have to post a link to that as I missed it. I remember reading an interview with her where she said she played guitar on TV and she was terrified all week in case she messed up so she'd been practising every day with her guitar teacher. I guarantee you Sinead wasn't practisisng all week with her guitar teacher before she did that performance. You can see and hear her confidence. She knows how to play so she's free to concentrate on the emotion. She's also doing it in front of what looks like at least 10,000 people, but she knows she can pull it off without being boring. You can do that when you've genuinely got the goods. A typical Sinead clam-fest:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jLGobWuiYuc You may not like Madonna's voice, but she hits a far lesser percentage of flats: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Goaorn7GYxU You'll also notice that she does this here balls-out, with no processing. Just to put all this in context here's a recent performance from Cyndi Lauper doing True Colours on the dulcimer. In fairness she has a keyboard player in the back there, but I think most will agree it's in a different league altogether.

about the topic in question, i would feel ripped off paying madonna money for concert tickets if her show was going to be mostly her trying to find her way around a guitar, but fortunately it seems like it's just for a couple of songs, in which case, it's like, fine, let the poor woman try to show off her skills, it's cute, whatever. it's just like why i didn't go to sinead's last tour - i didn't want to see sinead do reggae sunsplash for an entire show, so knowing that's what it was going to be, and not being a fan of her reggae album, i didn't go. i quite like her new album 'theology', which is a nice, pretty, acoustic album, so if that's what i'm in for, then i'll probably go see it live. if she throws in a couple of reggae songs, then whatever. it's what she's on about these days, let her get it out of her system as long as it's a smaller part of the show.

Sinead's vocal performance is so ridiculously weak and clam-ridden here that, even with S's mic loaded with reverb, etc., Madonna's totally raw vocal is more palatable (and, technically, way more precise).
