For the musicians...

I was recently reading the autobiography of Andy Summers(from THE POLICE) and there was a part in the book that had me D Y I N G laughing. Maybe I was being insensitive but I need to know if this is typical behavior of musicians. There was a part of the book where Andy says that his guitar was stolen. During the time it was stolen, Andy retreated in a dark place where he moped around the house crying and feeling sad. He refused to eat and would cry cry cry cuz he missed his "baby"(his guitar).
Is that type of attachment to the instrument of choice indicative of most musicians?

Absolutely.

I'd freak if my violin was stolen.dead Actually, one of my adult violin students just had hers stolen about three weeks ago. She said she was surprised by how strongly it affected her.

Yeah. I don't downplay pain that someone is feeling. It would hurt me deeply if that had happened to me. Especially to my main and favorite guitar. It's a part of me. Of my very being. I wouldn't be able to describe how deep that would cut. And there would be no replacing it with another guitar. It would be a drag if my main bass guitar was stolen as well. Certain guitar pedals that I love, which are hard as hell to find, if they were gone, it wouldn't be no "Oh well, I'll just go to Guitar Center and pick something else out." Nah... So I feel for Andy. Hope he found some inner peace from it. I remember the cat from The Plasmatics, the brother with the blonde mohawk, Jean. I read an interview where he said that ALL of his instruments had been stolen. EVERYTHING. He said it really broke his spirit but he saved up some money and bought new gear. That shit always stayed with me.

Sometimes it depends. I've lost a pedal or 2 and it was no big deal. Like B said, you can go to Guitar Center and buy another one. But if it's a special guitar that has personal and private value or meaning, then I can understand being upset.

That's why I always make sure my eyes are always on my gear before and after a gig..ya never know.

I feel bad laughing at Andy now. I recall how he said he even slept in the bed with the guitar. I guess musicians really do become one with their instrument

Nah, I've never slept with my guitar. I've fallen asleep with it laying across my stomach. But when I woke up, I took it off and set it down on it's stand. I've read about old bluesman sleeping with their guitars. B.B. King named his guitar "Lucille". Hendrix has said that he slept with his guitar. When Jimi stayed with the Isley family, Ernie said that Jimi always had his guitar with him, around the house. When he was eating, Jimi's guitar would be in his lap. If u asked Jimi a question, he would fuck around and answer u with his guitar. "Hey Jimi? You want some juice?" "doo-de-le-wah-wee".

Didn't someone throw that same guitar out a tour bus window on the Chitlin Circuit.

I'm probably not THAT attached to my gear, but nonetheless it's still inconvenient when your stuff gets stolen. Plus it's not in my faith to be so materialistic like that anyways. I know I could always recoup my losses.

But when it's something extreme like getting ALL your shit stolen like what happened to Poison guitarist C.C. Deville or the guitarist from The Dears, Patrick Kreif, then I'd be pretty pissed!

Well put it this way, our kid accidently knocked over the favorite geetar here and put a little scratch on it and you'd thought the Cracken had been unleashed. I don't wanna even imagine what would happen if it got stolen. Kind of like that old 60s Japanese film where these two birdlike monsters tear up most of Japan looking for their baby, yeah, it would be like that.

I own a trumpet, but hadn't played the thing
since 10th grade (appx a decade ago)
I think I'd get along fine if it was stolen

BUT... back in '03
I had my music collection stolen from me
when I was living in Marietta, GA
I had all of my CDs (the important ones)
in this case logic CD wallet type thing
that held like a hundred or so...

it got stolen right out of my homegirls truck
I cried like I'd lost a child on the way home

I've got most of that music I had PLUS MORE (since then)
I think there was a lesson to be taught in that situation
you know how you're not supposed to put too much value
into worldly possessions, because when you die
you can't take them with you anyway, so...

I haven't played my flute since high school either. I actually thought about taking it to the pawn shop. I won't, but I wouldn't die if it got stolen either. Who'd want it? Who would steal.....a flute. lol
