Is he good? I couldn't really tell as I only own that one song on a compilation. The track is great though. He's considered somewhat of a legend wo he has to be good. If you like southern soul like Johnnie Tayloer, Joe Tex, Bobby Womack ect, you should probally like him. PRINCE: Always and Forever

One of the great underrated Soul singers.
Since he was a singles artist a comp might be the best route... ...In Memorium (1935-1984) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I remember those now. You should check out "Shade Tree Mechanic". That's a blues ass-shaker. Also, "Wang Dang Doodle"..... We gonna romp and tromp till midnight We gonna fuss and fight till daylight We gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long All night long, All night long, All night long Sounds like one of my kind of parties. I'm adding my yes to those who said PsychedelicButterfly should check him out. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

I was told that Johnnie Taylor and ZZ Hill were the artists that kept Malaco in the black (financially that is). **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

JT may have signed with Malaco after ZZ's death. ZZ Hill was very successful for Malaco in the early 1980s and so was Denise LaSalle. Malaco also had some local funk groups such as Sho-Nuff and Freedom. I don't know how many people bought their records but the local stations promoted the hell out of them back in the day and we loved their music down here. Sho-Nuff was always touring in Japan back then also....or was that Wynd Chymes (another local group). All these local funk groups are now only available on Japanese import CDs unless you find the original vinyl in a used record store. Beginning around 1985 or so, I remember lots of bluesy type artists like Dorothy Moore, Shirley Brown, Johnny Taylor (I think), Little Milton, etc. being on the Malaco label on through the 1990s. Denise LaSalle is still on the label to this day making music. There is a large gospel music crowd down here and The Mississippi Mass Choir is huge down here. I don't know but I bet they are the ones that are really keeping Malaco afloat. . . [Edited 6/22/07 16:26pm] Andy is a four letter word.

She penned Someone Else Is Steppin' In for ZZ. My Favorite song by her is "Trapped By a Thing Called Love" from her westbound years. Malaco had some main stream artist drop in and cop some of that down home vibe too. My mother is from Grenada Ms. I know the Ms. Mass Choir too well.

I live in the Dallas area and all of those artists are big here. They were really big when we had a station that actually played blues. In the late 90s we had a blues dj, "Sweet Willie Mitchell" that used to keep Dallas up on the Malaco catalog. He played all of the southen blues and r&b.
I remember reading that Johnnie Taylor signed to Malaco after Beverly Glen Records folded (Anita Baker's label). He recorded one (or 2) albums for them, but they didn't fair well. It was when he went to Malaco that he started having minor success again. ZZ and Johnnie were friends (supposedly), but I heard that they used to have lots of disagreements over song choices and money. Supposedly all of this happened after Johnnie's music took off. If I'm not mistaken, all of the artists you listed are still with Malaco (except Denise Lasalle). BTW, check out http://www.americanbluesnetwork.com/ to hear the Malaco and Blues Sound. They play some good stuff. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-
