The White Stripes for me is usually a band I can take or leave, but this song's stuck in me like nothing else. If I hear good things about the album, I think I'll definitely be buying it. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I've never understood why people from England love this band so much. I like them and the gimmick is still working for them but...
Is it Jack's pail skin? | |

So I bought this yesterday, it definitely has the feel of one of their older albums (with some of the newer sounds thrown in). It's a more straightforward and less experemental record than the last one, and seems more uptempo than Elephant. You Don't Know What Love Is stuck out initially.
Sounds pretty good, but I'll have to reserve judgement until after a couple listens. My Legacy

I'm definitely enjoying this album.
Rag & Bone, I'm Slowly Turning Into You, Prickly Thorn, Icky Thump; there are a bunch of great songs here I think Jack is more comfortable than he was when he did Satan. I'm guessing he was really feeling the pressure of expectation for that record, and he made one that was self-consciously different. The songs were good, but didn't flow completely naturally to my ears. This one is easy and fun (though not necessarily more shallow). He's back to simply making music he likes, and at the top of his game. I might request less painfully distorted guitar solos, and I don't love St Andrew. And someday, I think he'll need to think more in terms of albums as opposed to just songs. He writes great songs, but I don't think the White Stripes have yet created a great album. He seems like he doesn't have the attention span for that yet. Maybe he's just trying to keep the energy spontaneous (and it's working) but I'm an album guy and I'd like to hear a true masterpiece from the White Stripes, and I believe they're capable of one. Since I'll be seeing them live next month, I have to get the album. I also have to pick up Nick Cave's Grinderman since they will be opening. Sounds like a really good bill. I hope that's lineup in Berkeley. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

I'm digging this in a big way. I had the funniest reaction today from playing it. I pull at a light banging out Icky Thump and this guy looks at me like WTF . I guess I can kinda understand the statement because here I am in my car with a Prince symbol hanging from the review, my afro all picked out and sunglasses. Just Call Me Afrochick

Interesting, but how does it shape up with their last 2 efforts? Get behind me, Satan elehpant How does the new album compare to these 2? small circles, big wheels!

It's less produced (more garage sounding) than Elephant, and more up tempo. It's less self consciously different than Get Behind Me Satan. I think I like it better than both of those albums. I'm finding that it maybe peters out in the end just a little, though. My Legacy

i like the new album a lot more than i liked the last one, though i dunno...maybe i'm just not in the mindspace for WS anymore, it's just not making me enthusiastic about listening to it very often. maybe it'll grow on me. i really don't mind it, i just think i'm samed-out by them at this point.

There is part of me that isn't always ready for a full-on feedback assault, too. Music has to match our moods, to some extent. What you say about samed-out reminds me of why I really liked the Raconteurs album. It had the talent & charm of the white stripes, but it was in a new setting. Moreover, it was probably a better setting; one that had proper instrumentation & production. It's kind of the same reason people loved Prince doing the George Harrison song. Put talented people in a new (even more conventional) setting and their talent shines brighter. My Legacy

I think the familiarity of their formula is what takes away from them. There sound is pretty predictable.

I think the familiarity of their formula is what takes away from them. There sound is pretty predictable. It can be both good and bad. Personally, my favorites are musicians that explore many different styles of music. But I can also see the appeal of putting on an AC/DC album and knowing EXACTLY what you'll be getting. I'm sure we've all had the experience of putting on Prince for friends and having one song fit the mood, only to have the next one completely ruin it. My Legacy

I actually slept on the White Stripes until they absolutely stole the show at the 2004 Grammy Awards. (I personally think they whooped up on Prince and Beyonce.) I've kept saying I'd get around to eventually checking them out, but I heard the title track of Icky Thump in a wreck-a-sto the other day, and !*@#!! The subsequent tracks seemed to hold up also, though I have no knowledge of their back work to compare them.
I'm definitely gonna get my hands on this CD, though. [Edited 6/26/07 14:09pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
